|  | | | So, I'll be going up to Naknek, Alaska to help out with the salmon season in a few days, and will be going through Anchorage and Seattle on the way.
On the way back I might spend a few days in Anchorage and tour around. Wondering if there were any good resources/explorers/advice for the area that anyone could offer.
I'll obviously be looking around for sites while in Naknek/Bristol Bay when I'm not busting my tail working.

| | | | I'm usually in Anchorage, but currently am taking a geology field camp in Fairbanks so I won't be able to meet up. I don't really know about locations in rural AK, but there are some cool places to check out around Anchorage. The Buckner Building in Whittier is a fun explore and it's only an hour or so outside town. Enjoy your trip nonetheless.

|  | | | What kind of transportation would you have? Any chance of borrowing a skiff? It looks like there's a few roads out there, but probably most people get around on the water.
I checked the USGS topo maps briefly (you can find them online). It looks like there's an abandoned cannery up at Kvichak and another one at Coffee Creek. My experience with rural AK sites is that the locals usually salvage and/or live at abandonments, so ask around locally. Even if the buildings are gone there might be some old rusty steam engines or other cool equipment.

| | | | Looks like another cannery/village at Koggiung (still semi-active?) with some wrecked barges or something visible on Google Earth.
And a great big one with lots of intact buildings (per Google Earth) across the river at Nakeen.
Some of these might just *look* abandoned due to the general decreptitude of Alaskan canneries

| | | | Appreciate the help guys. Got some nice shots of some abandoned canneries and derelict vessels on the shores. Really wish I had got the chance to do some more exploring around Anchorage (and especially Whittier- that would be amazing to check out). I'll post some soon.
