Subways in PDX?

I was in downtown Portland and I saw what look liked entrances to a subway. Some were converted into art installation, some were boarded up, and one was a mini coffee shop! I have not had any luck on finding any information about abandoned subway stations, does anyone else have any info?

Also, where are all the Portland UER folks? No meetups?

AFAIK there have never been any underground rail systems in Portland. What you probably saw are old entrances to underground public bathrooms, of which there are several. The coffee shop (big round glass thing with a mushroom looking roof?) is likely the 70s era Trimet bus stop that was recently converted.

Neat! I didn't know there used to be underground bathrooms. It does make a lot more sense than an abandoned subway.

Ya, you saw the underground bathroom entrances. There is underground rail in the Portland Metro area in the West Hills heading towards downtown and under the zoo for the Max Light rail. Only underground for a mile or two.

Derp! You're right, I totally spaced that. It's only been a few months since I stopped commuting using the westside MAX too. The Washington Park station is really cool, I wish there was a space where you could hang out there and have coffee or something, listening to the trains go by and feeling the rush of air through the tunnel is neat.

There's a lot of rooms down there closed to the public but everything is locked up tight and monitored by camera so sniffing around down there would be a bad idea I'm sure.

I'm not sure if there's any continuous tunnels left though. The tour is a collaborative effort between for-profit businesses and a 501(c) tour organization.

The tourist portion of tunnels or basements belonging to the business. The tours are scheduled to meet well in advance of the actual tour as its designed to bring customers to patronize the restaurant/bar that owns the basement.

It's an obvious setup. The basement is used by the business for storage too. You'll see kegs, water heater and such behind curtains.

As for the tunnels under sidewalk, I doubt they are around anymore. There are many large access hatches on the sidewalk, but Portland utilizes underground power service heavily and these vaults hold switch gears and power transformers.
