Boyd's Sanitarium (Las Cruces, NM)

Hey everyone, I'm new to the site and urban exploring, but I'm getting my start. This first place I want to share with you all is called Boyd's Sanitarium up in the Organ Mountains of New Mexico. Its about a mile and some change hike up to the site, but the trail isn't very hard. If any of you are in the Cruces/ El Paso area, let me know! On the way up there, I was able to poke into the old stable buildings from back in the 1910s, and poke around inside.

These buildings, which were once all part of a tuberculosis sanatorium, were constructed around 1910 by Dr. Nathan Boyd, medical doctor and international businessman. Legend says that Dr. Boyd had a beloved wife who was suffering from the terrible disease, and that he built the place, up in the rugged yet beautiful mountains for her.

Dr. Boyd was involved in a court case that would eventually deplete his funds; the sanatorium was sold to a Dr. T.C. Sexton from Las Cruces in the 1920's. It was intermittently run as a sanatorium and resort for several more years. Nathan Boyd's son, Earl, bought the place back in the early 1930's and moved onto the land, living in the Caretaker's house. In 1940, while Earl Boyd was away serving in the military, the remote structures were subjected to heavily damaging vandalism and looting by unknown parties. The place has been vacant ever since, despite changing hands one more time before being acquired by the Bureau of Land Management in 1988.

Anyway, there wasn't a whole lot of gear required, I would recommend some gloves just to avoid the splinters. The site is allegedly haunted, but I saw no proof of that...but then again, I don't have any equipment to collect that sort of proof. When we finally got up there, we poked around a little bit before I managed to find a way inside of the caretaker's building.

The caretaker's home is a two story (main floor and basement) along the side of a hill, supported my standing wooden beams on one side and the side of the hill itself. Here are some photos from inside the first floor.

Through the first floor, you can gain access to the basement without cutting the chicken wire covering the doors and windows (hard to see in some photos, but its there)

I very good first trip. I have a few more places in el paso and cruces in mind for the future to take this up to the next level. I would love to get input from the community on what they thought of my post, and where to go next, see you all later.

STELLAR. WONDROUS. Outrageously professional for a first post,,,,for those that are GLUED to thinking that post history at any given forum is EXACT for when exploring began. You have got "it"...whatever it is. The POLL might be a little over the top, but, whatever. Nice stuff.

I wasn't sure if that was dust in the basement or something else...I really cant tell the difference myself so I'll let you be the judge, but the place is supposed to be haunted.

Thanks for the support everyone! I'm looking at El Paso this time around and have a couple locations in mind, but they are going to require a lot of recon in advance because they are right on the border with Juarez, well see how that goes.

Welcome to the area, and Boyd's is always a nice trip! A word of caution. Posting things publlically is always a crapshoot. Boyd's is state property, and its common knowledge, so no worries. You have really sweet locations and post them in threads that can be publically searched, EXPECT them to get trashed. I'm not blaming UER, and nothing I've posted for full members only has been touched. I'm suggesting that you give some forethought to your posts. We don't have tons of locations out here. Always hate to lose one. Welcome to UER, and maybe I'll run into you someday.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Duly noted and advice gladly taken. Looks like I'll have to wait for the full deal to put up more posts, thanks, and see you around.

Interesting. How many buildings are there? Did I read the post wrong or did you only go in one building? I'd love to see some more pictures!

"Is that the entrance to the drain?" "Yeah" "It's right behind the police station." "Oh. Maybe we should go to a different one..."

There are several buildings in the area (not all associated with Boyd's sanitarium) There are 3 or 4 old stable houses along the trail that I was able to enter about half-way up to the site. They looked like this.

On the site itself are two main buildings, one of which I was able to get get into, the other I did not find a good POE without cutting through the chicken wire and I didn't want to do that.

Just north of the site was ANOTHER structure, this one made out of stone, which I have no idea what it is, and but its accessible as well. see below.

If you're talking to me, it's not edited; the lighting is done in real time, in the field, using colored gels and handheld light sources. Specifically, a red-gelled strobe fired inside the coach station, and natural and green-gelled xenon flashlights to light-paint the ruins building. And of course, copious amounts of full moonlight during the roughly two-minute exposures.

I've been going to school in Cruces for a year now and I don't know why I haven't gone up there yet. I just don't feel like hiking up there alone and there isn't really anyone who wants to go with me/I am ridiculously busy all of the time. Maybe next semester I'll do it.
