Easily the most understated danger of draining is dihydrogen monoxide.
Dihydrogen monoxide is a chemical that often accumulates in drains in both residential and commercial areas, and it can exist as either a gas or a liquid, occasionally in certain drains (mostly up north) as a solid. Dihydrogen monoxide is a natural byproduct of life and seeps into the sewers via the ground and osmosis and stuff.
To the rookie drainer, dihydrogen monoxide is a severe threat, highly caustic, suffocating and any contact with clothing will result in the clothing becoming saturated with the chemical and making a bad situation worse, creating massive rashes over large areas of the body and in short order it will make your wiener shrivel up and fall off. However, over time, the body creates a resistance to dihydrogen monoxide, and the vetern drainers among us lose any fear of dihydrogen monoxide after our first few encounters with a big, scary pool of the stuff.

I skimmed through that site, and they sound like crackpots to me. One of their claims is that DMHO causes school shootings and is used by the KKK. It all sounds fairly insane, especially when you look at their apparent political agenda...
As far as chemicals go, though, if you don't know what it is, don't touch it.

Truly terrifying. Every drain I've been in has had some amount of it. Here in Maryland, I've even seen pools of it in above ground abandonments, like hospitals and factories.

Indeed, there is a lead smelting plant in Dallas that's fairly common stomping ground, the entire basement is nearly filled with dihydrogen monoxide. It's a terrifying sight to behold. Such dangerous chemicals, just laying about.

Oh, and if you do see a catfish, the spine is in it's dorsal (on the back) fin. They can be super nasty.

Both pectoral fins are also armed with poisonous barbs. Those are the ones you really need to watch. I've seen an average sized catfish ram one completely through my uncle's thumb, requiring him to cut the barb from the fish and run for the emergency room to have it removed.
Yeah, careful with those.

I don't know anything about Australian laws, but in America, trespassing with a firearm is a felony, and I doubt the cops would just give you a warning if you were packing buckshot. Maybe you could get away with that out in the country, but in the city, I don't think that would fly.

Pools!? Here, we've got entire lakes of it and the EPA refuses to do anything about it, due to the cost of cleanup, despite the close proximity of a major EPA facility.
As a kid, contact with a small amount of dihydrogen monoxide, in its gaseous state, left me with burns on the palms of my hands.

Not with most toxic gases, because that is a filter, not an oxygen supply. Also the filters are probably expired beyond maybe having particulate filtration. Seriously, most drains are fine for air quality. Just stay in ones where you can feel a slight breeze, and don't lick the spiders.

Yes, some of the tunnels at my school have puddles of dihydrogen monoxide in them. It's a health hazard, and nobody seems to want to do anything about it.

If you're 2500' down a tunnel and break your ankle tripping on a rock, you're pretty well done unless you've got someone watching your back.
I explore alone sometimes, but I generally leave word where I'll be. If I'm somewhere with cell coverage, the risk is greatly reduced. No cell in drains.
