Here's a situation for you: Two explorers walk up to a house covered in Posted: No Trespassing Signs. They explore and go about their merry way. Long story short, they have a good time and leave. On the way back to the car, they notice a police cruiser circling where they parked. After a few seconds of debate, a camera is removed, and they approach the officer. They talk to him, say they saw no signs. He says, yeah I think they're on the other side of the houses blah blah blah. They act respectfully, explain they're just taking pictures and looking around, not stealing, spray painting, doing drugs, drinking alcohol, murdering prostitutes, etc. He asks what's in their bag, but doesn't check. They leave without giving their names or any information (except possibly plates, doubtful though). Point is, be respectful, have a camera, look respectable and you'll be fine.

+1. im new and iv done this countless times. cops, security, neighborhood watch. it works with everyone. talk properly and respectfully and you'll be treated better. most of the times when i enter a spot there is just a door open or a a big window already broken out. so i can always just say i just walked in.

| | | A friend and I were at a very popular, and large VA hospital compound. We didn't see any "No Trespassing" signs entering the compound, and we looked for them. We went into the largest building on the compound and honestly didn't really take the time to see if there were signs on the building. Anyway, after doing some exploring inside, we bolted from the open door to the road, figuring as long as there are no signs for the compound, getting caught there wouldn't be a big deal (and not wanting to get caught leaving the building). As soon as we hit the sidewalk an unmarked Crown Vic comes around from the back of the building. I start taking pictures of the exterior as if to show that we were there to cause no harm; IE: no running away or pretending that we didn't want to be seen. The car stops, backs up, and turns down the road we were on. He stopped and asked us what we are doing. We just stood there calmly (and innocently *wink*) and just explained we were there to photograph the "...amazing architecture." I have to say, he started a little gruff with us, but after our explanation, he really got polite and relaxed. He warned us that county cops patrol the area a few times a day and if we were caught we would be arrested. But, ironically on the way out of the compound he was talking to an older couple who were carrying a camera as well and were going to take pictures of lighthouses or something (the place is along the bay). The guy that stopped us chuckled at us, "Well, they are staying. So, if you want to stay, I guess it won't be a big deal." I think the guy was still feeling us out when he mentioned about the cops arresting those on the campus. I think he warmed up to us not being a threat to vandalize the place and seeing others showing up to take pictures might have helped "justify" our story, lol. The point is, if you are caught, being polite and innocent (even if you are only pretending) is your best bet. Now if you can avoid being seen, by all means do that. Also, the police have no right in searching your camera (without a warrant). So, if asked to see your pictures, you don't have to show them (of course denying them could raise some extra suspicion, lol).

| | | + 1 on the being polite and saying you didn't see the signs. Saying you heard it was going to be demolished and you didn't want to miss the chance to "preserve the structure forever" is a good one too. These work with cops.
Property owners can be a different story. It just depends on how crazy the person is. I've heard of people using infrared game cameras too, but I've never seen that in person at an abandoned location.
