I just got into urban exploring and I am wondering if I should invest in an abestos mask and if so what kind is best.

Get a P100 respirator. You can get it at Home Depot for about $46. Good idea cause you don't know what you're going to run into.

If I know of major asbestos or mold hazards, I don't bring anyone who doesn't own one of these. No exceptions.

From what I've read, black mold is the most dangerous airborne pollutant to explorers. More so than asbestos.

Or sometimes they are cheaper. Try Lowes. Ive seen them for like 20-30 dollars as well. I think the one i own was like 25 bucks? I dont wear it tho because im getting it all over my clothing/boots and going home with it anyway so whatever i figured.

If you can get one cheaper, great! I didn't scout around for the best price, it just had to be a P100 to cover asbestos etc. The mold I was exposed to the day before was not so nice to me.

I highly suggest that you read this thread too on UE Health Issues

I bought the filters at one place and went to a safety store that sells mostly to companies/contractors to get the mask, and they gave me it for free.

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house,
"Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/

My understanding of P-100 filters: They are fantastic for particulates, they have a 99.5% efficiency rating if I remember correctly. That being said a P-100 is not meant for either asbestos or mold, both of these have their own specific filters that will provide much better protection. Of course a P-100 is better than a P-95, but still it is not meant for asbestos. The issue is that asbestos particles are infinitely small, so small that once airborne the contaminant can remain aloft for up to two weeks with no additional air current. These tiny pieces sneak through the filters and make their nests. Once inside the body the particles are nearly impossible to expel.

Well let me again strongly suggest that you you go and do some more reading on the link I already posted earlier, to refresh your knowledge. From mold to asbestos to animal droppings, it will discuss it all and then some.

And yes the P100 is an asbestos rated mask - This is "borrowed" directly from Home Depot website: And I'm Canadian so prices are probably more expensive here.

Asbestos and lead respirator with cartridge: Protect yourself from air borne particles. This dual cartridge respirator is the ideal choice for protection against asbestos, lead and other highly toxic dust, mist and fumes....

Mold - N95 mask.

NIOSH disagrees with you, P100s are considered safe for asbestos...

Edit: But wait http://www.youtube...atch?v=9NQz8_6WW90
I'm just going to assume the P-100 filters are okay. I think Ill invest in a 3M 6000 Series Half Facepiece Respirator with 3M 2091 P100 (HEPA) filter (as shown in the video) unless I hear of a better one...

Spend the extra couple of dollars for the 3M 7500 series the silicone face-piece and modular design make it a respirator that will serve you comfortably and reliably for a LONG time.

@ Boss Safety for $18.50 as opposed to the 6000 series thats $15 and some change at Boss.

Oh and filters, I prefer the 3M 7093 over the 2091 pancakes. They are more durable, and they're not a violently bright shade of pink.
