Anyone 4x4 to anything neat ?
< on 4/7/2011 7:38 PM >

Found lots in the backwoods of bc. I'm debating doing the old brittania mines this summer. And while it's never hard to throw out posts on my 4wd forums. I figure let's see what U.E's have tO say.. Lemme know what kinda things you've found.

I'm not asking for locations... I would just like to know what else exists. Eg heard of abandon resort town (shhh) and the now abandon fire watch lookouts ( replaced by satellite imaging ) those are
Some I've heard of

You can get amazingly high up onto some mountains, well over 6000 feet in southern BC, up to some amazing repeater sites. Can see for days! Many are even 2wd, but snow can be an issue even in July/Aug.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

4-Wheeling is what caused the government to seal off the FSR's behind Britannia and demo all the remaining surface structures last summer. You can find my rant on the subject on the forums here.

Why the hate-on? You're saying 4x4ing is to blame for the continuing remediation? That seems unlikely: The government was under public pressure, they came up with a plan to clean up the Britannia site, and now it's being implemented. I don't see how 4x4s would exacerbate this; as concern for public safety (adits, ruins, contamination) is the basis of the plan. An accelerated clean-up timeline due to increased activity is doubtful; I'd bet it was all part of the normal schedule because money for remediation doesn't just appear out of thin air (especially after an Olympic-sized budget hemorrhage).

Any notions of secrecy surrounding this long-abandoned site on a busy highway just outside a big city are your fantasy: everyone knows about Britannia, and it only take a minute on the internet to find some maps of the backcountry stuff. The visiting/vandalizing of the Britannia site has been going on for ages, maybe you should blame the government for building better highway access to the site.

Personally, although I deplore the damage caused by reckless 4x4ing, I can understand their appeal and use. Hell, I've wished to drive one more than a few times; they're particularly well-suited to access some of the more remote abandoned mine sites in this province, and they can be used responsibly.

The FSR's behind the mountain are permanently locked down now due to idiots that thought it would be just awesome to go 'wheeling in the basin where they deposit the sludge concentrate from the water treatment plant.

The schedule for remediation called for Shear and other sites to be cleaned up dead last pending funding, as they posed little ecological concern compared to the mine adits themselves. Yet, low and behold after a year and a half that saw well over 500 people a month wandering around up there and scrappers going apeshit on the old shear powerhouse, the powerhouse is demo'd. Go look at some of the freakin' wagon trains BC 4x4 was organizing and tell me they didn't force the governments hand out of safety concerns.

You can find the remediation documents as well as all other documentation on the .gov site.

Scrappers...Anyone remember the little green sailboat down near where the Chinook was a few years ago? He was one of those scrappers, going after the windings in the lower powerhouse. He's now in prison for attempted murder after he stabbed someone in Brigade Bay on Gambier Island. There is a lot more to this story, but we'll save that for another day.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Hmm. I looked for a couple hours, found lots of interesting information, but nothing that referenced "idiots wheeling in the basin" or "scrappers going apeshit on the 'ol powerhouse". Maybe you could link to the relevant documents?
I did find mention of the road gate needing a replacement lock & chain.

I suspect the remediation schedule is late, if anything. True that demolishing remaining structures and general mine closure are lower priorities, but given the remediation started almost a decade ago, isn't it about time?

Also, this notice states Britannia/Furry Creek access road is closed and 'industrial use'. Which makes sense, because nobody wants to be dodging logging or dump trucks on those narrow switchbacks.

But what I'm really saying is 1) don't blame the 4x4s for the accelerated closure of Britannia unless you show some evidence, and 2) not everyone with a quad is an irresponsible dumbass.

For what it's worth I don't like to cause any real ecological damage. I stick to main roads and trails. I air down to help from digging ruts. And I know far too well that it only takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone else.

I have found some intel on other remote mines. I've decided to Persue another tempting mine site this summer. If there are any other people with 4wd up to journey maybe check out some abandon sites. I just want to see these sites before someone ruins it

Could someone post the rant?

If that shot was taken in Jane Basin, then that mud is mainly comprised of the concentrated tailings that they remove from the water treatment plant and haul up there every 4-6 months. Mmmmm, delicious heavy metals.
