Cool Train Car Cabins!

Hello! I am new to UE, but I like the idea a lot and am excited to see how this all pans out. There is a lot to explore in NL, so many abandoned villages that have been completely shut down as the fishing industry collapsed. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of such places, but I do hope to buy a vehicle this summer and do some more exploring! Last summer was my first expedition on the Island, I had no car so I went by bicycle! I circled the Island keeping mostly to the T'Railway, and here are just a couple cool places I found.

1.

2.

I took shelter from the rain for a few hours in the Last Run, and entertained myself by snooping through the books and things that were left behind. The inside was pretty badly torn up, but I did find a sort of log book or guest diary for the place. The last entry was from the early 2000s. Also found few bottles of booze with a couple shots left even! But I wasn't brave/foolhardy enough to sample it =) There was also a terrifying outhouse, which I used for the sake of it.

Here was a whole village of boarded up cabins, there were probably a couple dozen or more, but I didn't see them until I was right on top of them! I believe some of them might have still in use occasionally, but it seemed like most of them had been left for years. I didn't want to disturb anything too much, in case the owner did come back, but I also wanted to spend the night inside as I was expecting rain again! So I searched for one that I could enter easily enough and brought my things inside. Felt like there were eyes watching me all the while. The cabin I chose had three rooms, the main/kitchen area was in pretty good condition, but the two sleeping rooms were all messed up. I leafed through some books and things, mostly there was only regular cabin supply kind of stuff. The was a stove, but I didn't want to risk using it, so I made my campfire outside. It was a good night, but creepy as hell being there alone! I have to admit, I was pretty afraid of ghosts that night =) In the morning I boarded my cabin back up and hit the trail again. Thank you, kind host, for lending me the use of your shelter!

In retrospect, why didn't I get any better photos of there places? D'oh! A photographer I ain't, but I'll do better next time.

Looks pretty cool! Looking forward to seeing some more nfld explorations, I think there was someone else on the board looking for other explorers in the area.

Do you find those near to any tracks? I've taken to hiking around by train tracks up in Wentworth Valley in Nova Scotia, but I haven't had any train car finds or anything. Lots of old iron buckets and equipment though.

Anyway, if you're finding these far away from train tracks, I misewell venture into off the tracks a little more.

Neat pictures, great story. I wish I could just jump on my bike on a Sunday or something and go biking/exploring all day, sounds like you've got it good. Love the "private" outhouse haha. I look forward to seeing some more pictures!

canadianman000: I don't know what the mountain was called, but it was somewhere between Howley and Badger on the T'Railway!

Rural Axe-plorer: They were right next to the tracks! The T'Railway is a recreational path that's been created on the old railbed which used to traverse Newfoundland. I only saw a handful of them across the whole island.

I'd like to go back and take a picture of the cabin with the rear half of what i think was a chevy van built onto the side of it. Attached to almost every cabin out there is something that was once a vehicle, or the cabin itself was once a vehicle.

I'm as Canadian as it gets.

Huge respect for doing that all by bike (it's the best way to do it anyway, at least if it's warm enough!). I'm in a similar position; I walk, hike, or bike everywhere I explore or photograph (or bus if absolutely required). I'd love to get to NL at some point but I haven't made out there yet.

I'd definitely be wary of buying a new vehicle in this day and age, though: Watch a documentary called "Crude Awakening" and then include the fact that Saudi Arabia may have overstated its oil reserves by 40% and you will see why: I am quite convinced that we have the makings here of price shocks/societal changes that will make the 1970s look like a birthday party.

Why is this terrifying? For every calorie of food we eat today, 10 calories at an absolute minimum were required for its production, processing, etc (NOT including transportation!). This oil shortage may be hitting us already: Global food prices in 2008 hit record levels that were beaten only the next year, in 2009.

I guess many might consider this off-topic (I'm not a full member so I have no access to the off-topic forum), but I think it's very important. There are going to be a lot more abandoned places like what you've found over the next few decades, I think...

It would appear that with this outhouse, you give up some privacy for additional ventilation.

The railways in NS were abandoned in a much more organized fashion than in NFLD, and I doubt you'll find any abandoned trains.
NFLD being an island (obviously), it wasn't cost effective to move the trains back to the mainland, and the scrap value wasn't always worth the transportation cost, so many were simply abandoned.
In NS, they could just drive the trains elsewhere and use them, or roll them to the scrapyard.

Very cool!! I've always wondered what happened to those old fishing communities. That's amazing.
