| | | This is really cool. I've been down that way a few times, but have never seen that stuff; particularly that mine-ish thing. How close to the water is that?

This can't be more than about 150 metres west/northwest of the shoreline. Here is a screenshot of my Google Earth, showing the location I believe the object was at.

Thanks for the compliments! I've been teaching myself photography for a few years now - I started with a little Fuji F10 in Europe and now I have a very nice Olympus E-520 DSLR. It's still exceptionally light for an SLR, which allows me to carry it everywhere I go. It's doubtful that I'll be able to afford coming to Ontario for awhile, but I'll be moving to Cape Breton over the next 2 or 3 years and after that the forests/ruins of Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, etc will certainly be calling me. Means saying goodbye to places like this, though!

| | | since we're on the topic, when you turn left onto the road that takes you to York Redoubt, and you follow it straight down instead of right to York Redoubt, there is a church on a little road. I got into it last time around, it had a window missing. Is that abandoned? It seemed to be in fairly decent upkeep.. didn't get much of a chance to check out anything other than the main floor, but there appeared to be a basement as well.

| | | My understanding is that the church is part of the Redoubt historic site, and is thus owned by the federal government. I assume they don't really have any plans for it, and are leaving it locked up but unused.

| | | Posted by tribeachpunk The more I look at it the more I think that there's no way that it's a mine at all. No pressure plates, just a few loops. I'm no expert but Google Image searches for harbour mine vs. metal buoy turn up results that seem to back my opinion a little bit.
|
If I understood the folks from Parks Canada correctly when they were outlining the harbour mining (that was controlled from George's Island), the early mines were detonated by remote through wiring. I suppose that would allow the mines to be scattered among friendly shipping without danger, and set off if they felt the need to use them.

| | | You know, it kind of looks like a mine-and box, an anti submarine mine. http://upload.wiki...d/Mine-and-Box.jpg The only differences are the lake of spines and the seam runs around the top and the middle. Could the holes we heard about be where the trigger spines were removed?

There were two holes in it... One on the right side from the picture's perspective (a small bullet hole, barely visible), and a larger hole behind it (not visible) about 1.5 inches-2 inches dia that looked to have been caused by some sort of metal pole that burst through the shell into the interior. I didn't photograph that, unfortunately. [last edit 3/23/2011 12:50 PM by Haller - edited 1 times]

| | | This is a great site. I am embarrassed to say that even though I live right around the corner from it, Monday was the first day I ever went walking there. I'm sure it ranks low on the hardcore scale since it's just sitting there but I sure enjoyed it.

There are some spots at YR that rank pretty high. I think they're locked tight now.
