a-d will help remove flaring and improve image quality
e-g will improve what you have to work with when you bring the file into post.

a. remove any cheap uv filters if glare is an issue.
b. get a lens hood
c. use high apertures (f/5.6-8), longer exposure times, low ISO.
d. invest in a good tripod, slik sprint pro II w/ ballhead.
e. use aperture priority or manual mode.
f. use tungsten or florescent white balance setting when shooting at night.
g. shoot in RAW+L jpeg mode, it's night so the buffer shouldn't matter, and a 2GB CF card can hold at least 100 shots. (you may need to buy a card reader to import raw files off the card, SanDisk ImageMate All-in-One if using windows XP/Vista ... 7 I'm not sure, Mac can do direct import with usb cable) RAW will give you the most flexibility especially at night.

I like 1 the best, not because of the quality of the image but what it shows.

And I would totally have cropped 1 into a landscape style shot, the bottom and top just take away from the shot.

Havent got any
b. get a lens hood
Need one
c. use high apertures (f/5.6-8), longer exposure times, low ISO.
Did this
d. invest in a good tripod, slik sprint pro II w/ ballhead.
Will at some point, for now my affordable one is suiting my needs well
e. use aperture priority or manual mode.
These are all shot in AP (I think)
f. use tungsten or florescent white balance setting when shooting at night.
Good Call

Doing this too

Vadder pretty much nailed it here. Did you shoot in RAW? I would love to see what you originally had to start with. Not too shabby Trap. I especially like some of the black and white. I especially like the lines in 4/5. Get the tripod, and spend the time to set up the shot.

Nice explore too, as I mentioned before, I love me some bridges!

Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door.

Id say that 3 could benefit from a lower ISO to reduce that noise a bit.

4 - higher f/stop or focus on infinity to solve the DOF issue as the end of the bridge is out of focus.

Perhaps a bracket and blend too to solve some of those hotspots for you also.

Overall I say that 6 is the most pleasing of them.

Any advice on finding infinity when your lens isnt marked for it? (Canon's Rebel XT kit lens)

All the way one way and then just a tiny amount back.

Don't just use infinity. Most lenses the infinity mark isn't 100% accurate AND normally human vision views things in the far distance as out of focus and things closer in sharp focus. It would be unnatural to have the distant hills behind a cityscape in sharp focus and the city in less sharp focus.

I don't know about you, but A LOT of places I go ... shining a flashlight or laser pointer would be bad, REALLY bad, handcuffs bad.

I developed my own method that works with a 10-20mm on a rebel xt viewfinder alone. Most extreme example I can give next too a fisheye. No assisted live view and an ultrawide lens. Usually I put it to 20mm but I can do this (barely) at 10mm too. Zooming in as much as possible really helps.

Does not work with a fisheye so if you have a fisheye just go with halfway between infinity and the last setting.

You need a pinprick of light in the distance (distance midground is preferable for reasons discussed above). I find streetlights are the best.

1. Look through your viewfinder and spin the focus ring to infinity.
Notice how it's sorta fuzzy and note the size of the light.
2. Spin it all the way to close focus.
Notice how it's really fuzzy or and that light has become "bigger" than it was before?
3. Spin it back to infinity.
4. Turn it VERY slowly ... that pinprick should get less fuzzy AND it should get smaller ... when it as as small as possible: it's in tact sharp focus.

That's how I do it and I shoot A LOT at night with an older camera and wide angle so it should work for everyone. Make sure your diopter is adjusted for your vision.

And please note almost all digital images need some sharpening in post. If you are using RAW files (which you totally should be -- especially at night when you take less pictures anyways) CameraRaw default is not sharpened enough. I apply sharpening to each resize of the image individually using smart sharpen after it's been resized..

Don't shoot north of ISO 100. Just bite the bullet and take longer exposures. Get a remote if you have to.

Low ISO low f-stop (large aperture) has been my rule of thumb.

Looks like somebody found a ladder...

I love 2 and 3. The lighting on the Ascent is awesome.

(Editor's note: if you choose to roof the Ascent, pray to every god you know of. I'm kind of regretting not going on this expedition...)

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

Actually, didnt need to worry about a ladder, or even a buddy for that matter. The barrier is easy enough to get over if you have any sort of upper body/abdominal strength to speak of. I want to go back and take more time getting good shots, tbh a lot of these were ripped out quick and dirty because we only had an hour on the parking meter and spent about 30 of those minutes scouting/climbing the thing, then about 10 or so to get back id say we only got 15 or 20 minutes actually up on the bridge. When I go back I'll have the better part of the hour to be on the structure, as well as the cahones to climb over the roof next to the lighthouses on top and get to the central portion.
