| | | All for the HDR shot. In the non HDR version the whites are just starting to get blown out. And I agree it looks too bright and "clean".

| | | The HDR one for sure. It's subtle...not even close to what some folks refer to as "clown vomit" HDR. It tones down the blown out highlights near the window and brings out some nice textures on the wall in the foreground and the floor. I think you did a really good job with making it look natural and that's what HDR is meant for imo.

| | | Either can work quite fine. Everyone is saying the second one is almost blown out but you can easily rectify this by curves/levels adjustments or a simple dodge and burn depending on what you like. As for the details, you can bring those out with local contrast enhancements or if you like plug-ins topaz adjust is a great little tool for details and other local enhancements too. There is potential with both. I think the fact that you seem to have got a handle on it so its not over processed rubbish is the biggest part of the learning curve that you've overcome.

Personally, I like the effect of doorway shots if they're well done and the lines are nice and straight. Makes me feel as though I'm peeking in on something I shouldn't be seeing.

| | | I have to say on these I like the HDR, well processed. Pulls in some shadows and cools the blow out in window. I think this is well processed.

because there's no HDR in his shot... using photomatix (or any HDR app) doesn't mean the result is a real HDR... It is pretty much, just darker (look at the shadow) with some small tonality change and boosted highlight .. [last edit 2/26/2011 2:30 PM by almostock - edited 1 times]

I'm just curious, because I've recently taken an interest in HDR photography...if Photomatix doesn't create an HDR image by using 3 or more different exposures then what does it do? And what is a true HDR image? What program or process do you think is the best way to achieve a real HDR image?

| | | photomatix is fine, HDR = High Dynamic Range. That means creating an image with more details in the highlights & shadows (roughly) than the camera sensor can record in one single exposure. Photomatix can create real HDR images but it is not as simple as mixing any 3 shots (or more/less) together with random adjustments, this is just a simple and basic way of postprocessing. The picture is perfectly exposed and the histogram doesn't show any big clipping. The small amount of blown highlight can easily be corrected with the recovery tool (raw) and/or the burn tool.
