That's strange. I pretty much scowered the basement, from the office building side all the way to the factory side... I remember distinctly keeping an eye out for power and didn't see any. Must have totally missed it. I'll have to bring in my multi meter next time.

OH and BTW, I wouldn't advertise on an open forum.

Ya, if you make it back inside i'm dying to know both whats on the other side of the well constructed, "keep the hell out door" they made to close off that lighted section, and what that space is used for. I've found in other buildings that while most of the building is abandoned, they'll make almost a safe room around the main power intake and electrical distribution center for buildings in case it gets repurposed, maybe its something like that.

ya, your probably right.

I know the elevator shafts are sealed shut now, I wonder why. It could be an elevator. My other guess is that it just leads outside. There were some doors in the basement that had tracks and led outside. It's hard to tell without context in the picture. The button switch sort of resembles an elevator switch. There's also another sealed off portion that's especially contaminated with asbestos or something.

The few times I've been there there haven't been signs of non battery/generator operated electricity. It could be possible that a small section of it is for some reason powered by a small generator, especially the darker parts like the basement. I doubt they would leave it on all the time, and you would hear the generator too. Combining the time I spent there, I've spent about an entire day in there, and I don't remember someone leaving lights around inside; that would have been a major convenience.

The lights only exist in the well closed off section you can just see the light flowing over the makeshift wall they made to prevent access. When i climbed up it to get a view of what was on the other side it just looked like a continuation of the hallway but kept in better condition (Likely since scrappers and punks couldn't get in there). But the hallway went on beyond where i was able to see. It's been a while and I never thought that I was going to be engaged in such a conversation about it (I thought everyone knew about it?), but i know i didn't hear a generator any of the times i saw it. If anything it was only the humming of electricity running through the fluorescent lights on the ceiling (similar to the size of these below that were being wrapped up to be moved out), but nothing like a diesel generator. And it would be on all night at least. I never when in the day time but i know when i would spend maybe 5 hours there during the night, that it remained on the whole time. It looked like the contractors and such worked in there during the day.

The lights were (are?) in the Power Plant. The basement connects to all 4 remaining buildings but it's blocked off at the Power Plant. As of 2009, that building was being used to store the grounds-keeping equipment (they used the old electric tunnel carts to tow around the mowers!)

That sounds logical. I get turned around as to where I actually am on the property while walking the basement. I just know the layout by how it looks as i walk through, so I can't remember if where I saw the light is directly under the power plant or not, but that would make sense.

I definitely have to explore this place for myself soon. I just don't want to go alone and I'm only in Denver about every other weekend. those weekends sometimes including thursday and sunday nights. And I'll be leaving the states for 8 months and i have a feeling it will be gone by the time i get back.

Doubt it will be. Think Gates is gonna be staying for quite awhile.

i tend to agree on this. when i took this photo, i thought Gates was in the throes of its last winter. they had just demo'd the south side of the factory and it seemed the rest of the factory was next.

that was five years ago.

Gates is in abandoned building limbo thanks to this awesome economy; too expensive to clean up and reuse, too expensive to clean up and tear down.

Sounds familiar... and how right you are. Funny how that catch 22 is playing out amongst quite a few interesting places isn't it?

I've heard that there's now a break in the fence somewhere, but avoiding security is gonna be a fairly difficult task.

I may have a try if I can get things figured out. I'm still fairly noobish as far as my "locations explored" count goes, but I've read up on urbex like goddamn Twilight Sparkle.

Anyways, I'm planning on getting in one way or another, WITHOUT use of crowbars, lockpicks, Chuck Norris, Kamehamehas, Devin Townsend, psychotic cartoon characters, CEO'S, tactical nukes, Lord Voldemort or 80's hair metal. I promise all of those will stay far awiay from any locations I visit.

Screw it, I'm just gonna call somebody and see if they'll let me in. In all logic, it's probably the best thing to do to get in right now, unless the city/redevelopment company/whoever the hell owns it is paranoid about asbestos/toxic chemicals/other "hazards". I'll do some research, figure out who owns it, call em and report back here.

So there's been a few cars on a daily basis lately, and work being done in front building. Walked around it today and saw ventilation holes cut on the second floor. Not sure what's going on.

I had talked to some denver managers for Keiwit construction the other day. I asked them if they knew what was going to happen with gates and when. They told me they used to have the abatement contract for Gates but that in 2006 they ran out of money and abatement was never completed. They said that ultimately the plan is to demolish, not repurpose/remodel or anything. Over the past couple years as I would explore, each time, more and more rooms would have stickers saying "asbestos free." I can only presume that once they finally get it all abated, the building will then go.

Hopefully that's a slow and painful process, as abatement is extremely expensive.

I'm looking for a group to help me with this, if it's still even there, no matter what security or workers, we will make it in there if not by the front door, then by a giant trampoline. Don't be a dead thread. let's keep this one going on until the whole building is gone

In other words, you're looking for a support group eh? It's okay. Life can be challenging sometimes.
