| | | Posted by FilthCity this may be a "n00b" question but if everyone wants to keep locations and stuff a secret because vandals and cops can read the threads how come the mods haven't changed a setting where you have to be a member to view them? maybe it costs too much? just wondering why that hasn't happened yet.
|

Costs too much? The website is owned, coded and web-hosted by Avatar-X, a member of the site. There is no cost other than time to modify code. Having said that (I use that phrase way too often), there ARE settings where you cannot view threads and locations. This is how full member and basic member work. Full member locations and threads cannot be seen by the regular public nor search engines. So people put their locations as "full member" to keep the public from seeing them. In time, the taggers and vandals who have obtained full access visit them anyway thus defeating the purpose and thus defeating the purpose of my explanation blah blah and blah/ Long story made short, if you care about a location not seeing any mischief - DON'T add it to any database. | | | I may have a simple and plausible answer at least pertaining to my region. There has been a hell of a lot of snow and bad weather in general lately. Keeping lots of people (both previous explorers and aspiring explorers alike) indoors. Being stuck indoors they have far more time to sit at the computer and decide they are going look for places to explore; given that they eventually wind up here. Such was my case. CaptainSqueakyhttp://www.uer.ca/...asp?posterid=46561 and I were looking for some new places to explore and we wound up here.

I agree. but even if just browsers couldn't see the threads ideally people on here would still use code names for places and not give P.O.E. and locations away. just a step up to make sure. i don't mind either way as long as people are careful with what they post. but it's just surprising that such a small, tight knit, and rather secretive community would let people just browse without an account and turn up in search engines if they could easily control that.

Uer is about ten different forums. Play with the fid=1 in the url to see. It is not closeknit, it's too big for that. The donations cover hosting each month, and if hosting is covered by donations then the banner goes away that month.

I said that it doesn't cost money to modify the code - hosting a site though does cost money. Either that or AV is working towards a new Porsche.

cuz...though the GT is powerful and american... id rather have a car i can take around corners, drift,go fast,be cheap, have really good milage for its type. but yes. he can save up for a GT =] if he really wants a beefy american car he can go for the new zr1 corvette only a mere 110,000 dollars.

Not quite so. A basic member can view any location (active or abandoned) in the database that has been set to publically viewable by the creator. Once a location has been deemed demolished,it becomes publically viewable by default. Just sayin'.

| | | Posted by The Seeker They're EVERYWHERE!!!! So many posts from < 1 month members, are showing up everywhere, on every thread I look at!!! Was there some like ad in the newspaper recruiting more UER members???
|
Haha poor Seeker. I was barely into your first sentence when my eyes pried themselves away from the flow of your words to the color of your star number. But I get what you mean. You're not saying that the quality of the site has depreciated with all us noobs, you're merely stating a fact, as you've noticed it. Like I said on the introduction page I stumbled across UE as a culture when I read a 3 year old copy of Readers Digest at Christmas. Until then I had no idea there were so many people who love exploring... I thought I was unique. Had I known of the existence back in 2003 or prior, I would have been here.
Posted by Played That is true. Ive only been on UER for not even 3 years, yet ive been exploring for 10. And i know thats the deal with many other members on UER.
