Brachs in HDR

Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day, combine that with me wanting to mess around with HDR and I couldn't resist going back to Brachs before I head back to Florida. I would have loved to have taken more shots but, I was alone so only about 10% of my attention was focused on my photography with the other 90% being focused on not getting caught/raped/murdered/mugged etc..

This factory really fascinates me alot. For a lot it's just a bunch of empty rooms, broken glass and peeling paint, but for me, when I'm exploring/photographing I'm experiencing history. Brachs to me, represents a by gone era. These photos capture the bigger picture, but there are so many small details that I want to come back and catch when I have a buddy to come with and some more time.

I think many people will see the "HDR" in the thread title and just pass this one by, but I can honestly say I do like these photos. Most HDR's are waaaaaay overdone and overused and over and over and...

I use HDR sparingly - hardly at all, really. I also rarely enjoy looking at HDR photos. The only one of these that I think approaches being overly cartoony is the last one. The others, especially the B/W's, look very nice IMHO. Even the aforementioned last one is very acceptable to me.

I like the colors and you did a fantastic job framing the set.

I think you did a nice job and thanks for posting.

consecrated, thanks for the kind words. Honestly, I couldn't agree more with you. I find that most HDR work is WAY over the top and starts to look more like a cartoon or painting than a photograph. My goal when I do my HDR stuff is to keep it looking as real as I can. On the last photo I tried over and over to get it to come out less cartoony but I wasn't able to.

The thing I like about HDR is the ability to shoot into an adverse lighting condition. Unfortunately, like you pointed out, people use it too much and also seem to use it a lot to compensate for a lack of talent. Anyone can take a bracket of photos, run them through photomatix on the grunge setting and get something thats going to catch the eye, that doesn't necessarily mean the picture is worth a damn.

I was just here about 2-3 weeks ago, and I didn't come across many of the places in these shots. Awesome job, the only over-HDR on these is probably #5 but it's not terrible. The photos still kept a lot of depth, which is great. Beautiful. For your 90% of attention being on not being killed/raped/mugged, I on the other hand felt pretty safe here.Strange.

The pile of dirty needles behind the rail road tracks was a bit unnerving for me. I also thought I herd other people walking around which had me on edge as I had seen foot prints earlier. I'm thinking they were probably fellow explorers, but I was concerned it could have been security too :/. It would have been a much different story if I had somebody else with me.

Honestly, this is what HDR was meant for...to even out light. not to make overcooked stuff. I like 5 the best of the set.

#1? It's the south-eastern-most building, from a northern perspective. Considering security vans are on the northwestern side, it's surprising you didn't see this picture- did you enter on the eastern side by the tracks?
