|  | | | OK, so I've read the threads about respirators and I know there's certain things I need to look for in a rspirator, however I found these on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11701&item=3188772697&rd=1 and I'm sure you'll notice that there's not much info on em. I was wondering if someone with a lot of experience with different kinds of respirators could tell me, does that look like a fairly standard cartridge? Or is it just a cheap little POS that'd barely function as a dustmask? if it's half decent for asbestos (all i really need to worry about for the most part, aside from dust) i'll grab some, as the guy's selling a BUNCH of em. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I work the Oilfields in Norther Alberta and Im my Crew Safetey Foreman
DO NOT buy those masks, they both look likt the POS's that they are and will function just as well.
If you need a mask, go to your local Safety supply store, not an army surplus, and buy either a 3M halfmask or a North halfmask and the approriate cartridges ie; ask for a braod range cart. that covers P-100 dust requirements, Organic Vapors and H2S escape as well as other petrochemical and noxius fumey vapours.
Make sure you have a fit test done in the store, because a mask with no seal is like tits on a boar, totally useless.
And dont think this is gonna be expensive;
Where i purchased my masks for my crew, they were 35.50 cdn each and a pair of carts was 25 dollars, not bad, but a necessity no less.

| | | | Actually I put a bid on another one which looked like a more quality piece, and I looked it up and it meets common safety standards. it's a Moldex 8000 Series and comes with organic vapour cartridges, and p-100 carts are easily available, looks like a decent unit for the price.
EDIT: thought I'd add that it's a medium, because I figure I have about a medium sized face : P

If you buy one online thats either too large or too small, then its useless. Basicly what Dixon said.
My dad gave me a big lecture on this. He knows a bit about it because he's an Enviromental Safety Engineer.
Basicly, put the mask on, cover up both of the filters and try to breathe in. If you can get any air, then it don't fit right. Likewise, cover the exhalation thing (small hole where your breathe exits...) and breathe out. You shouldn't be able to exhale.
Most UEing needs a charcoal filter, as thats what filters asbestos, fiber glass, and hazardous fibers of the like. There are alot of different filters for different uses etc, but charcoal should work for exploring buildings.
The filters all have saftey ratings, based on how many sizes of the fibers they block. the higher the rating, the safer you are (if I remember correctly)
If I'm wrong, anyone can feel free to correct me as I got this lecture a little while back.

| | | | as near as I can tell, all the respirators I've found on eBay are from industrial suppliers. There's atrend I'm noticing where ones listed for like 30 bucks will be on eBay for about 10 or less, which would be easy to pull off and profit from if you got them in massive bulk orders

Also, though cartridge dependant, this mask will not filter out dangerous fumes/gases, such as CS (tear gas) or chloride...
Here is a really good mil spec gas mask:

Hmmm. It sure /looks/ like a sweedish mask... I've never actually used one of these, so I wouldn't know. Anyway, the old nato type sand filters aren't too bad. When I was in the Norwegian army, we had a mask very similar to this, but with the filter on the side. Very nice mask, but hard to breath through. (Tried sleeping with it once, and that was pretty claustrophobic!) Since it has a "sand" filter, it cleans the air from just about anything.
Another thing... I ought to point out that this type of mask isn't actually a "gas mask"... None of them are. They are "protective masks". At least in Norwegian military terms... In order to call it a "gas mask", you need to have some sort of air/oxygen supply, like a fireman's mask.
Maybe this should be an entry for the encyclopedia?
EDIT: The above is written with my background in the NAF. "Gas mask" IS the proper term elsewhere. What we in Norway refer to as "gas masks" are SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) systems. I'll try to check my facts better next time. Sorry.
