Miami Marine Stadium

I just got a new point-and-shoot to replace the one that got stolen, so I went down to the marine stadium to test it. I'd gotten used to draining, where I can control all the light. This place is hard to shoot without bracketing, but I didn't bring my tripod, and CHDK hasn't been ported to my new camera yet. A wider angle lens would have been nice too, for this spot. Here are a few photos anyway. I'm sure this place is overphotographed, but maybe some of you haven't seen it.

The stadium has 6,556 seats and overlooks the water. It was built in 1963 for viewing powerboat races. A floating stage was used for concerts. It has been abandoned since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Its cantilevered awning-like roof is supposedly one of the largest spans of unsupported concrete in the world.

There were actually a ton of people there today, maybe about 20 or more in various groups coming and going. Most of them looked like highschool kids. One group had a mom who must have driven them. She sat and chilled while they played with their DSLRs. Also saw an oldish guy with a tripod. There were a lot of graffiti writers today. I ran into a guy who I had vaguely known in highschool. He said the place isn't usually so busy. #8 is the piece he put up while I was there. This is a good skate spot too. Saw a couple people with skateboards. There was no sign of security today. It's a good spot to chill. The city keeps pretending that they're going to fix this place up and use it, but I think it's being used better the way it is now.

I love the fact that #2 pretty much jumps off the screen and punches you in the face. Great colour and angles. It looks like you could get on top of the stadium? Is that what #7 is, because that looks like a pretty awesome view. Assuming it was, how high up?

Cool location, great captures.
#5... just trying to figure out where it was taken from, and all I can come up with is from the concrete roof, hanging over the edge and looking back underneath. Is that right?

Yes, if you walk over the catwalk into the announcer's booth, there is a ladder that goes up to a hatch in the roof. #6 shows the hatch. You can maybe see it in #5 too. #5 and #3 were taken hanging over the edge of the roof. #7 was taken from the southeast corner looking west. You can see downtown Miami's skyline across the bay. The stadium is only 47 feet tall, but it's on an island in the middle of the bay. The building's north side extends into the water. Here are a few more pictures that might help give context:

#9: On the center of the roof, looking west.

#10: Hanging over the north side of the roof, looking east.

#11: Under the bleachers at the front of the stadium.

#12: The back of the stadium.

There are some dark rooms in there under the stadium for those of you who prefer more enclosed abandonments.

Here's a video of 1960s powerboat races at the stadium:

Here's a video of Jimmy Buffett (blegh) playing the stadium in 1985:

I had heard there was security, but there was zero when I went there. I guess it depends on the day.

Could of been. I went within the past week and there wasn't anything floating in front (or underneath) though. I wonder how far apart the photo is from zoom 19 to 20 on Yahoo Maps though.

Nice pics!

Last time I was there (a year or two ago) they had round-the-clock security. I guess they must have finally realized that was way too expensive. Beautiful spot, highly recommend at night.

Went back again; took more photos. This time I bought this cheap add-on wide angle / macro lens for $30 off ebay. It gets a little more lomo with lens flares and at times it can make it impossible to focus exactly how I need it to be but it's added a pretty cool flare for a fraction of what a decent lens would cost.

Sweet, dude. Great pics! Wish there were more places like that around here. Out towards the mountains theres an old camp that was semi-abandoned for a while, but eventually got cleaned up and re-used.

I went to the Stadium last weekend and there were kids on the roof biking and skateboarding which i thought was a little crazy but cool, there were also 4-5 hot girl models there doing a few shoots, saw a couple getting shots there and people spray painting, overall there had to of been 30 +/- people there!

Here are a few of my pictures...
