Yes we sure got the snow! Im thinking ahead for spring/summer.
Found some stuff on cliff diving at Seebe as well as some building pics on Flickr... more or less wondering if it's still patrolled.

The cliff diving was exceptional but drew large crowds of hosers who littered everywhere. I think the straw that broke the camel's back was people leaving needles all about the place. I guess I must have been there last in 09 because you could drive right up through the town. The road to the diving place was gated but it was an easy walk.

Crazy, I thought it was gated at the WEST end all this time, just a minute over the one lane bridge... guess I snoozed on this one.
I'm going to try to get permission to visit.
Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure if this place is still there...

I've found a couple references such as this one that suggest that very little remains of the hamlet, much of it having been torn down. Since Seebe is reasonably close to where I live (only a couple hours drive), maybe I'll go check on it this summer.

I was there on Sunday and not much left, just a overgrown (and spooky) baseball field and the water treatment plant.
The previous time I was there it was a fully functioning village, so this was a bit sad to see it cleaned out.

That's really wild. It wasn't exactly New York City but I am surprised that it has literally been wiped off the map.

What a shame

EDIT TO ADD TO POST

I found an interesting photo tour of Seebe. Pictures were taken and the album assembled by somebody who grew up there. They seem to have very strong feelings toward the place.

The link and some discussion is there. You have to register with some site to see the album, but you can just use a fake email address as it doesn't make you check it to complete the registration.

This is the most complete album of Seebe pictures I've found. The most stunning images are the before & after shots that show a vibrant town in one with little to no indication that there was EVER a town there in the after.

Cool-thanks for that. I looked it up on wikipedia last night and there was definitely more to the town than I realized ie they had the last one-room school in Canada that only closed 15 years ago.

I'd doubt they are the last "one room" school, given some of what passes out here- I think Port Renfrew (BC) is 2 rooms, and is an active school. I'd suspect some of the reserve schools in NW Ontario are one room, because of class sizes. (High School is, for the most part, boarding in Dryden or similar "big" centres for the Reserve Students. That's how my sister describes it, anyway. She's spent a fair amount of time flying into scenic places like Atawapascat and similar)

We lost our two local one room schools in the last twenty five years or so, Jordan River (BC) had a one room until 1985 or so, when for one year it dipped below minimum (~10?) students, and SD62 closed it, and Otter Point suffered a similar fate. Otter Point I think, just about had fallen in on its-self, and the big justification there was that "it's only 10-15 minutes to Sooke, and the school needs to be rebuilt..." I'm not a big fan of the giant bus route, as the kids from Renfrew get bussed for around 2:40/day to go to high school. Even from here, it's 40 min/day.

If you want to get really technical about it, there are numerous Hutterite Colony schools that are one-room schools.

If you want to get even more technical about it...the "one-room" Hutterite Colony school I've visited actually has 4 rooms -- the classroom, the teacher's office, the boot room and the play room.

I think by "one-room" they mean a single-classroom, single-teacher, all-grades-shoved-into-one-classroom school. I also think they are referring only to public schools, rather than charter, colony, or misc schools.

I'm well aware of what constitutes a "one room" school, having attended a alternative school in 1980 in Toronto, and then Toronto's smallest Public School, which was under 150 students at that time, going from JK to Grade 13.

Port Renfrew School is run by Sooke School District (SD 62), and has...well, I seem to think the mention was 2 teachers, when I was asking. We're about equidistant, and there are reasons behind asking, beyond idle curiosity. That would imply that they have more than 2 classrooms, I would suspect as many as 4 classrooms, but it's still a small public school. The other two I mentioned were one classroom schools. I don't care if there is a cloak room, a teachers room, a washroom, ect...it was more that I would be suspicious that Seebe did not have the last one classroom school in Canada.

Peach, since you are so adamant that Seebe wasn't the last one-room school I thought I would go to the wikipedia page and see what the source was and if I could get more info. As it turns out, it was the last operating one room school in Alberta, not Canada.

Right I recall hearing about that when it closed, the last one room school in Alberta.
