Help me out here. Seriously!
< on 1/16/2011 3:12 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

OK, I have a relative that works at Arizona Highways. They have gotten me a tiny tiny toe in the door, if only to have my stuff critiqued by one of the photo editors. I was asked to choose 3 of my images to let them look at. I am kind of scared of this, but If he sees potential I may have a chance to go out on some shoots with photographers for the magazine so I can learn what they want (not so I can publish, just so I can get better. I know I am NOWHERE near ready or good enough for something like that). Please take a look and tell me what you think of these, and any hints for post that I could use to make them better. Thanks everyone.

This one I was unhappy with the sky, as it looks blown out, but it was very cloudy, anyway to correct this?

I feel this one is a little weak, but my wife insists she likes it a lot and I should send it. Is she sabotaging me? lol

If I go wildlife, I like this one better:

Thanks again for the help in advance. I am afraid to send any of these, but if I don't I may blow a chance at a very cool experience. Be brutal, but if you have some tips to improve these I would love to hear them. Or let me know if there is something better on my Flickr. Warning though, the 10 or so most recent are not really serious photos, don't even look at those.

Jonno

re: blown out sky

It's not super-blown out by any mean. I just put that picture in Photoshop and checked out the histogram, there were a few pixels off to the right (blown out) but not much... Nothing a quick exposure reduction on the sky area didn't fix - and it was so minuscule that it's not even worth editing it to fix. It's fine, and it's my favourite. But of course I'm biased towards these types of pictures because I'm into Geology and rocky landscapes.

Send it.

re: sunset

Doesn't do anything for me... Foreground is too dark and while the sunset is pretty, since I can't see the foreground - the overall picture is kind of boring. If I had shot this, I would have used a flash (hot shoe mounted) to illuminate the foreground a little more (even if it was brush, it'll give the picture some texture and liven it up a little). Although the flash wouldn't have reached the distant mountains, it would give the viewer a little bit more sense of depth then what is offered.

re: steps up

Interesting, but I'm left wondering what the hell it goes to or what it was for. Nice blue sky up there and the stairs keep taking me up to the top and I keep wondering what the hell is up there! I can't stop looking and wondering! For that reason, I kind of like it.

Send it.

re: paw print

I like this picture only because of the lighting. The shadows in the paw print give it a nice detail and depth that makes the print stand out more. Crop the shadow out of the lower right... It keeps distracting me away from the paw print.

re: birds on a fence / gate / whatever

Colorful. Just a buncha birds hanging out, doing whatever... Sure, why not? The thing I like about this is that it's almost perfect how the birds in the foreground alternate the birds in the background - it's almost so that no birds in either "ground" (fore or back) over-lap, there's a bit, but not much. The grey pole on the right in the background annoys me a little. No biggie, but I think the shot would be a lot better from looking at the fence head on, instead of off on an angle a bit.

Send it.

re: flying birds

Does nothing for me. Looks like the new cover for Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds".

1. i think it could be darker overall, but i like it. or more red. i feel like the rocks wanna be red really bad but the light isn't letting them.
2. really boring. the edge of the mountains is nasty looking.
3. this is strangely interesting. i think it might look better with the arbor-thing cropped into the center.
4. crop out the top a little so that very top paw print isn't in. it kind of draws your attention away from the nice looking paw.
5. this would be boring, but all their expressions make it really cool.
6. conversely, this would be cool, but they all look the same.

i'd say 1, 3, 5. or ignore their request for only 3 and send the paw print too.

I really like 4 and 5. Your wife is right about the paw print photo, it is interesting. I think 5 could be drastically improved by a 1-2 degree clockwise rotation so that the concrete edge was aligned with the edge of the frame.

Thanks everyone. I have edited the coyote paw print and I may send it. I looked again and i guess i need to clarify, the birds on the fence is the one the wife wants me to send. I tried to move around and frame the shot better going straight on to the fence and that is what caused the next photo of them all in flight. When i tried to rotate it some to correct this, it just throws off the top of the fence and cuts the birds at the bottom in half. Any suggestions? should i just lose the birds at the bottom and deal with the top of the fence being screwed up? Can i make some sort of correction for this i dont know about?

This is the crop I had in mind for the bird photo. It preserves horizontal symmetry by having the two fence posts about the same distance from the edge of the frame. The birds at the bottom are not cropped out and it quite evenly divides the birds into the 9 sections (rule of thirds) of the frame.

Too bad the lines are crooked in the photo of the birds on the fence; that is a cool shot. The last one makes my hair hurt; it's way oversaturated. The others are not bad, but not all that remarkable either.

I thought of doing an edit of the birds when I first saw it but didn't because I didn't know if you'd be okay with it. I decided to do one and if you want me to delete it I will.

This took me approximately 5 mins in PS.

- angled viewpoint changed to simulate head on view
- birds on the bottom cloned out
- background pipe on the right cloned out
- image cropped

I am absolutely ok with you doing an edit. The only thing that worries me is giving them anything that has had portions of the photo significantly changed, such as cloning out the birds. That magazine is very particular about image manipulation in that regard from what my aunt has said. I just didn't know if taking birds out would upset the guy if he checked and saw I had done that. Gonna have to call her and ask if it would be a big deal, because I definitely like that better.

Thanks. I sent off some of the photos. The photo of the birds on the fence I cropped and changed perspective using PS. It may have actually worked. I was asked to give location, date, and time of the shot. Not sure what that means, but I like that something I shot caught his eye at least. I am looking forward to the critique he promised to send. Hopefully This will at least get me a trip out with one of their photographers.

Hmmmm. I took that photo in a wash next to a large military base in the desert. It wasnt a cat. Way too big. I guess it could have been a mountain lion, or more likely a bobcat. I guess i just assumed coyote, as I hear them all the time in the evening (I live right next to the base), and see them a lot when out in the desert taking pics or hiking. But, I guess it is prime bobcat country too.

I sent all three. I was told to send 6 in a follow up e-mail. Then I screwed up and sent 2 really crappy ones, and had to recall the message and resend.

Yeah, I didn't mean cat as in house cat, If it was big- like 3.5" across, Mountain lion is probably right. Bobcat about 2.25" across.

Good luck BTW.
