Gear Recommendations

Just wanted to recommend a few pieces of gear to everyone, I know it's stuff that's come in handy for me while UEing:

= Water-Free Hand Sanitizer: This stuff cost me a buck from Dollarama (Might I add, also got 4 D-Cell batteries, 8AAAs and 4AA plus two earbud FM Radios, along with that sanitizer for $9CAD) I used this stuff at the sugar factory to get 20 year old sticky-ass fermented sugar off my arm, it was gross. If you skinned yourself anywhere though this stuff'll sting a bit but, whatever. Suck it up ya little pansy!

Pros: compact, cheap, effective, handy when water isn't
Cons: Stings on wussies with flesh wounds.

='Mechanix' Gloves: I picked these up at Canadian Tire for $40CAD. I know it's a little pricey, but they're padded front and back, a piece of hard plastic over the top of your hand, the palms are extra padded for "handling tools" according to the package, but it also comes in handy when climbing ladders, or if need be navigating a rope. Thick hide prevents cuts etc., without adding too much bulk to your hand. They fit tight around your hand and close at the wrist (nothing worse than having crap stuck in your glove) and I have NO problem using my digital camera and manipulating all the buttons on it while wearing these. I'm sure there are similar "pit crew" style gloves out there aside from the Mechanix brand, and I dunno if they'll be quite the same, but I know these gloves are very comfortable, and tough, if a bit pricey.

Pros: light, tough, comfortable, tight wrist, padded front and back, look cool.
Cons: a little pricey (though definitely worth it)

=Light Tactical Vest: Ok, I know you're thinking SWAT Team but these things are VERY functional! Think of it this way, I got my vest for like $60CAD flat at a surplus store, which was like half the price I paid for my Backpack. With all the stuff I keep in it, I couldn't keep it in my pockets. Spare Batteries for EVERYTHING, Hand Sanitizer(see above) Flashlight Filters, my Mini-Mag, an LED headlamp, 5" locking knife (You never wanna be trapped somewhere saying "If Only I had a knife!"), my digital camera, an FM radio, and various other tools and doodads. If I wore full army fatigues I'd have to load EVERY pocket, and they'd be hanging around and banging into my legs and shit which does not make for good mobility or a comfortable walk. A backpack you say? Maybe sometimes, but I know there's a lot of tight fits involved in some of the sites I go to where I couldn't push it through in front of me, or pull it behind me, I'd HAVE to leave it there. Basically it's a very compact, comfortable, functional way to carry your equipment around. I even slide my main light between it and my chest and it stays in place like it was planned that way. Not to mention, alternatively I could load it up with film, batteries, lenses, filters, slave flash, etc. for photography instead of carrying around my entire bag.

Pros: So many pockets, very comfortable and adjustable, adaptable and expandable
Cons: pricey, but still not much more than a half decent backpack

Mechanix gloves are great. My brother is a mechanic and does pit-crew stuff at weekends and his lasted for years.

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=040111471&r=2154&g=121 - cheap tool vest, probably not as many pockets or quite as well made but very cheap.

I can vouch for the Mechanix gloves. I used to be a mechanic and those things saved me from probably a thousand busted knuckles, cuts, as well as heat and chemical burns. All without taking away too much from the dexterity I needed to work with itty bitty screws and such.

They are a bit pricey and you can find knock-off versions for less than $20, but I recommend sticking with the original. I tried the cheapie versions and they practically fell apart if you looked at them the wrong way. Another good version of these gloves are the ones put out by Mac Tools.

I agree with the vest suggestion as well, although they can look a bit suspicious depending on what kind you have. Personally, I have a fisherman's tackle vest which has a million pockets as well as one huge pocket on the back which I use to carry extra clothing if I think I'll need it. It is indeed much easier than lugging around a backpack or stuffing BDU puckets.

I think I prefer my fisherman's vest over a SWAT/military tactical vest for several reasons. First, it is less likely to attract unwanted attention. I explore in a lot of places that require me to pass through areas with people in them. Definately the kind of situation where a tactical load bearing vest would make me stand out. Whereas a simple fisherman's vest is more plain and inconspicious, especially if you have it in a "normal" color like tan or brown.

Also, you can find a decent one at almost any sporting goods or fishing store for a reasonable price. Mine set me back a measly $19.99. Compare that to the $75 and up (at least where I am) you will probably pay for a tactical vest at a surplus store.

Those who make peaceful change impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.

I think a fisherman's vest only looks inconspicuous if you have a fishing rod as well : D But if you can find 200lb test line you could use it as a grappling hook! Exkal actually suggested this clothing as well: http://www.511tactical.com they have tactical clothing with a buncha convenient pockets, creating a great blend of tactical ability as well as keeping you VERY low profile.

I love mechanix gloves but I tear them up real easy. We got them for free at work all the time and they were all black. I genrally go with flight gloves and some leather ones for repeling on top.

Seems like there's a lot of people pretty down on the idea of using backpacks here. Obviously it's going to vary greatly based on where you go, but I'm pretty attached to using my pack. The sheer storage space outstrips most anything else (important, considering I tend to carry everyone's gear, as well as my mapping stuff), and when your exploring revolves around college campuses, there is nothing more inconspicuous by a long shot. That and, if you have a quality pack like mine, it'll take just about any punishment you care to throw at it (although mine is starting to wear out after several years of extremely heavy use).

It's like Narnia down here, except without all the satyrs.

I wear my Camelback, it has just enough pockets to cary my stuff and keeps me with water. This is also a plus because I sweat like a pig so I need to always have water on me. I like it, plus it is pretty slim and doesn't weigh me down to bad. I would suggest one to anyone.
