|  | | | I haven't been draining long enough to have ever considered it in the winter. Is it generally just a bad idea to be draining this time of year because of possible melting snow and ice? I can't imagine any snow would melt fast enough to fill a drain, but I'd rather be safe.

I prefer draining in winter; it cuts down on the odours. Then again, the drains over here are significantly larger.

| | | | Winter is draining season! The further underground you are, the more stable the temperature is year round. A nice deep drain with minimal air flow will stay around 50˚ F year round.

Most drains I want to check out have an easy entrance at the mouth or the outfall, so this won't be a problem.

Make sure snow isn't melting today and you won't get flooded out. Beware of the outfall having ice. At some point you'll probably break through this ice and the water that gets in your boots will make what should be a pleasant drainhike into a horrible cold-footed day. Voice of experience there, so mind the ice just for that.
Only a few places in the world have extensive drain-ice deep in the drains, so you'll probably only find ice curtains near infalls and outfalls. Do use secondary lighting to really appreciate these things. Toss a few lights behind 'em then stand back and look. It's pretty; the more colors the better.
Dress in layers and consider how you'll adjust from outside cold to drain heat.

But shallow drains are still cold as fuck. Colder during than surrounding air during the day but warmer at night.

| | | | I like winter draining. It makes for awesome ice formations and all the icky spiders and shit are asleep or dead. You just have to be careful not to get wet... not like summer draining where you won't freeze to death.
