| | Sulfuric Acid in the Drains! < on 12/3/2010 5:09 AM >
| | | From the Denver Post:
Northbound Interstate 25 is closed at University due to a sulfuric acid spill between Washington Street and Broadway. Phil Champagne, a spokesman for Denver Fire Department, said a semi-trailer hauling about 38,000 pounds of sulfuric acid was leaking the acid and motorists reported the leak. He said it was a "considerable spill." Some of the sulfuric acid got into the drains and Denver Wastewater has been notified and is on-route. Champagne said the driver of the semi was able to exit the vehicle without injuries. Firefighters assisted the driver's dog in evacuating a vehicle to avoid contact with the spill. Sulfuric acid is highly corrosive and presents a mutilation hazard, Champagne said. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation website, the interstate was closed at 7:36 p.m. and there is no estimated time of reopening. Source: http://www.denverp...6763698?source=rss
uh oh. I never quite thought of this as a threat while draining. 38,000 pounds of sulfuric acid in a drain might just ruin your day.

| | | there was a thread for this just below but no matter... the section of highway in question drains into rivergate. i wonder how long it takes to flush all that delicious acid into the (pristine lol) Platte?

| | | Seriously? Ugh. I was going to do Rivergate this weekend. I hope it clears out soon. It'd be nice if they just flooded it instead of waiting for snow melt off to get it all out.
"Is that the entrance to the drain?" "Yeah" "It's right behind the police station." "Oh. Maybe we should go to a different one..." |

| | | I would imagine it was contained rather quickly, the hazmat scene that spill caused was ridiculous.

Yeah no kidding. I was exploring an old plastic factory(it was a weird place, with a weird history but I gather they did something with plastic at some point) and found a ton of that stuff. Highly corrosive means it literally melted your clothes, I was an idiot back then and found out the hard way. No real damage done, I was smart enough to not actually touch it, and now people just think I'm trying to make a fashion statement. incidentally, I still have a bit....I bet it's really concentrated now...this reminds me...I should probably check up on that...I mean...if it melted through... | | | it's okay, you can just us baking soda!
the Post City crews and an environmental contractor successfully contained about 50 gallons of sulfuric acid that spilled onto Interstate 25 before any could leak into the South Platte River, officials said Friday. Public Works and Environmental Health officials used large amounts of sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, to neutralize and absorb the sulfuric acid, said Meghan Hughes, spokeswoman for the Department of Environmental Health... ...Fire crews created dams around the spillways in an attempt to keep any more acid from flowing into the drainage system. The drainage systems along the highway belong to CDOT but eventually flow into the South Platte River. Some vehicles initially drove through the spill. Champagne said the acid could corrode those vehicles. Gary Lasswell, compliance manager for the city's environmental quality division, said the contractor made a slurry with baking powder and water, and let it flow into the drain to neutralize the acid that flowed into the drain. Lasswell said none of the acid reached a second drain about 250 feet below.

wait, what was that last sentence? 250 feet is waaaaaay too deep for rivergate. hmmmmmmmm...

I was on I-25 today where the acid spill was. There's lot of white everywhere which would be the left over baking soda. It is somewhat on a hill so I think that what they're talking about is the acid flowed into one storm drain intake, but didn't make it 250 feet down the hill to a second storm drain intake. Maybe? I was coming home from denver the night of the spill and saw all of the hazmat and other trucks, pretty cool. They really sent everybody out there.
