From Trucks to Trains

Today I was inspired to conduct an impromptu urbex. Aided by Google Maps and my horribly squeaky bike I made my way to the destination. I ended up near the train yards, with a nice view of the city behind it. Actually, this wasn't the train yards, it was an old truck weigh station/whatever else right next door.

The office had been apparently abandoned for a while. The papers say 1991, but I didn't look too hard for a current date and I highly doubt it was that long, though I can't be sure. In any case, the office really wasn't the thing I was looking forward to. It was cool, but I had seen something that I really wanted to get to.

7.

Just a little jaunt away, there was the actual weigh station. Old empty tanks sat around rusting, squirrels chirping, birds watching. Very creepy.

9.

The watch tower! This was what I wanted to get to.

10.

There was a lot of climbing, hoping, cursing, scrambling, and hyperventilating. There was no ladder or actual way up there, so I improvised one (free running finally paid off).

There were a ton of wasps inside the place, but it was still way worth it.

16.

I snapped this on my way back out to my hidden bike and then I was off home.

17.

All in all, a very satisfying day for a spur of the moment thing.

As you know, I also enjoy trains. These are some shots from a location featured on the Walking Dead. redSky and I went there about a month ago.

1. this is a platform from a scene in the Walking Dead

2. if you keep going down those tracks, veering right towards downtown, you come to this place

3. if you veer right on your return, you come to the remains of Union Station, torn down in 1971. all that is left is the platform, shown in this photo.

4. keep going and you go back underground, where you will find this amusing sign

5. this is still part of the platform, which must be two hundred yards in length. it was a big train station.

I've actually driven around these tracks (at least I'm pretty sure), though I never realized what they were. This is pretty amazing; I wish the station was still standing, I can only imagine how impressive the architecture would have been. Hopefully you made sure to check for zombies before wandering around underground.

It was pretty cool to walk on the top of a train, especially when I had to duck under the highway. I wonder why it just got left... any one know?
