| | | Hello you all.Just yesterday,I was in a city park when I noticed something I never saw before. There was some sort of metal/concrete structure. It resembled from a distance,a dock leveler, but on closer inspection, there were five rigid steel beams running horizontally. This was in a graded area where a depression was created.Right across from it,there was a similar piece of construction, this time,a little different. It was sunken into a hill.Five steel beams of the same sort of grade/strength,only this time they were vertical. This whole assembly was at a roughly 45 degree angle with the ground.I thought this was some sort of drain system, but I don't know. The only manhole that I found around here was depressed lower than this thing.I have seen drain outfalls before, but they always have some access manhole.Any explanation?

| | | It would probably help if you said were this place was. If its in the river valley beside a the river, then I'd guess its the remains of an old dock or something. Back in the day the river levels fluctuated far more than these days, and before their were bridges there were many barges that helped you cross the river. Most the bridges in the city are named after the ferries they replaced (Groat, Waterdale). If this is near the Walterdale bridge there is a small path that leads down to the river where the remains of John Walter's (who gave the bridge its name) last ferry are rotting away in the bushes. When the water is low you can see the remains of his stern wheeler as well as the remains of an old pier. The river valley was once full of saw mills, coal mines, ferries, piers and railways.

| | | I have a fully functional camera, but anything that was there is probably going to be fairly obscured by the snow (why couldn't you have posted this a week ago when it was still nice out?!) If you wouldn't mind, shoot me a PM and we can see what's what =)
