| | Places to legally practice rope work in MD < on 10/17/2010 6:46 PM >
| | | Does anybody know anywhere I can legally practice SRT in a natural environment around here? like, free vertical abseils and such. I'm not asking for a UE location, trying to not trespass, not looking for anything arseable or worth vandalizing. I'm just wondering if there's anything better than the 30 foot railroad bridge I last rappelled off with MindHacker. ... and perhaps more legal? A climbing gym's no fun obviously... So, of the legal & climbable natural structures in the area, which would be best for such activity? [last edit 10/17/2010 6:48 PM by vov35 - edited 1 times]

| | | I don't know about MD specifically, but I know there are a few state parks in NC (Pilot Mountain, for one) where you can climb and rappel on the cliffs. There might be similar spots up there.

| | | look at state parks, also you could look at local rockclimbing forums. You're not likely to find something man-made, taller than 30 feet, thats legal AND free to rappel from.

Does being in a state park automatically make it legal? xD

| | | I'd be on the look out for disused transportation bridges considered to be non-critical infrastructure. i.e. pedestrian bridges, abandoned rail bridges, etc etc. if you do it at night you probably won't be seen or bothered. if the cops can't easily drive out to you ... you are unlikely to be seen or bothered.
Illegal? Probably as illegal as going into drains: i.e. not very or not at all.
At the most the cops will probably tell you to stop.

Well, I don't think there are any laws against rock climbing or tree climbing in state parks (except for maybe the Redwoods out in California). So you should be fine to use trees for your SRT practice. The first time I ever did anything with SRT was in a park in the middle of Raleigh with ULiveAndYouBurn. We only got harassed by a small child who was very interested in what the hell we were doing. For safety's sake you might want to considering bringing a buddy. If you mess up and get stuck or have a serious injury, it'd be nice to have someone there to get help (or just laugh at you while you get unstuck). This would be especially true if you were going to go for a more secluded spot.

| | | There are a few climbing walls at Carderock, Maryland. They are pretty popular though especially during spring/summer months.

| | | I'm not familiar with all of Maryland, but if you're in western MD I'm sure you could find some abandoned grain silos and such. Climb up the ladder that's already on the side, secure your ropes on the structure, rappel down. You wouldn't get much height or excitement, but it's something.

| | | WHere in MD are you? Rock state park is great. There is a 30' face in the middle of downtown Westminster that you can top rope. You do have to know how to find it though. If you wanted to shoot me a message, I'd be glad to help.
