Crystal Pepsi

jeep-w and I had a truly epic weekend. We hit up Gilman for Saturday night and I've got a bunch of photos to go through from that, but upon our return on Sunday we were still amped so we decided to go to Denver and explore Crystal Pepsi which neither of us had done before.

It's a long slog through lots of 15-foot brick tubes, fair warning if you check it out.

The entrance, about 200 feet from the opening.

Walk through a few miles of this.

It gets real boring, so we were excited to see something like this.

There are a few more tagged crystalpepsi posted to flickr.

And seriously, get pumped for some crazy photos from Gilman.

not when you stay at the gilman mountain hostel! located on historic main street minutes from the shaft house and the car graveyard, the gilman mountain hostel has everything you need - one room warmer than all the rest, good cover on all sides, and protection from mountain lions and state patrol (though not the 0rBzzz, man).

our door is always open! (mostly because it doesn't have a latch)

call 303 827 5761 to make a reservation!

(this number actually went to a phone in the shaft house. it was written on the dial. no idea where it goes to now, call at your own peril.)

Fun to see some new images from Crystal Pepsi, not many drain folk in Denver these days. I'm embarrassed to say that its been years since I've done any serious draining; we "found" all of the big ones back in 2004-2005 and just kinda... stopped.

I am interested to see your photos from the mine however!
But I still don't understand why Impreza and his cronies insist upon staying the night in the town where you can get rained on, seen, or bothered by mosquitoes. Staying underground in the mill is so much more interesting!

By the way Mr. STI, I plan on calling that number from work tomorrow.

It's just some dude, and not the shafthouse at all. I was quite let down.

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!

Lame! I was looking forward to opening a new landline and letting the shaft-house phone ring forever.

and by and large you all found most of them. there have been, what, three found since then? not a large number. denver is frustrating on many fronts...

At this point I'm still not aware of any serious drain explorers in Denver before I started finding 'em, but who knows? I've seen tags dating back to the 80s several times, some even older, but never any reoccurring in other systems. Guys have certainly been in these drains before us, but not in all of them citywide... if you follow what I'm saying.
I do know there are several big ones that we still have not found, and some we likely don't even know of, but the largest are no longer mysteries.
Like Australia, we just don't have much unexplored territory remaining.

Do you say this because of the lack of drains or the lack of willing explorers for the drains?

But yeah, the Gilman Mountain Hostel was indeed quite inviting! Keeping with tradition, I left a present in the last room on the left for whoever happens upon it next...

It did get damn cold, though, for September. We had ice in the water bottles overnight inside. I wonder what it would take to get the heater working...

We went pretty far in past the park. I think we followed every path until they became 5' or less. Anything smaller than that, of course, is a gamble if you'll find a way out or if you'll just walk a couple miles to a dead end. Not sure which specific Y you're talking about...

We had to backtrack a couple times and just wound up popping a manhole in the park to get out, much to the dismay of the families giving us some of the best wtf looks I've ever seen.

Recently myself and a friend explored crystal pepsy, needless to say we were not disappointed. Starting at the base we walked as far as we could until we came to...a creepy pump. I was spellbound the entire way, it is hard to believe the size of this beast. The brick is in great condition and vandalism is nearly non-existent. Along the slog we spotted a large wooden plank and some nice drain jellyfish. Some of the best parts for me include the large junction room, the entrance and the sheer size and complexity of the masonry construction. Our journey ended when we arrived at the source of a mechanical noise, a large pump that was fed up to the surface through a most unusual makeshift manhole. The end of the pump we could see was inserted into the muck just behind a low metal gate that seemed to be acting as a kind of sediment trap. After putting a foot into the muck it was decided that we go no further. Instead we backtracked to a likely exit, popped a lid onto the course and made our ascent to the surface. Here are a few flicks from the trip.
