Hey all, new to the site not exploring. Well i'm looking for a titan missile silo in Az. Looking for some help in locating. This one has been excavated sometime ago and the concrete was busted open to allow access. I've done alot of internet searching including sat photos. I have one possible location SE of Tucson off hwy 83. Any help out there?

Hey there! I'm new as well (also from Arizona) and I've actually been planning a trip to a few of the Titan Missile silos but as far as I understand it (http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=83700) we shouldn't be posting too much information in the free boards about locations. I can tell you that in about 20 minutes of searching I found the locations and had the majority of them as "places" in Google Earth (however I am a Google ninja).

If there's a meet up anytime soon I have no problem giving them to you in person, still reading into the rules as to what's allowed.

If you're around Tucson, check out the Titan Missile Museum, the only remaining maintained Titan II silo, still with the missile in place (though not the warhead!). There's a tour that goes through the entry and exit procedures for personnel, and the launch process for the missile. Awesome stuff.

Then you can go look for properly abandoned silos

The Titan Missile Museum is well worth the trip! I used to live about a mile from it, and decided to wander over there one day and take the tour. They do still have a missile "in the tube", and you can look down through a perspex dome from up above and see it there, as well as when you're down inside, looking through some of the access door hatches into the silo itself.

The missile launch procedure is pretty cool, all the original equipment is still in place and it all lights up the way its supposed to as they're actually initiating a test fire sequence. Everything is in perfect condition.

I think it was the Russians, several years ago, complained that we had a missile in the silo and they wanted to verify there was no payload onboard. As though we were "calling" it a museum but it was actually like a secret launch platform. So the officials over here had a hole cut into the side of the top of the missile to show that there is no active payload inside. And they added a few renovations to the site, including freezing the sliding launch doors in place so the missle could not be fired.

I'd say definitely check out this place first. It's in Green Valley, Az. Just south of Tucson. It's well worth the trip, and as Meta mentioned, then you can go check out all the abandoned ones and have a reference for what you're looking at.

Cheers =)

I want to go to the Titan Missile Museum just to use their radio antenna if nothing else.

The SWR (standing wave ratio) is typically 2:1 over the full range of 6 MHz to 30 MHz

Yeah, that's visible from the road. I used to go past it all the time and think "whoa, that's cool". One night I went over to it and checked it out, then decided to come back during the day and do the museum tour.

I'd heard that they use it for local radio clubs and such, but I hadn't realized you could just go sign in and hook up to it, that's pretty sweet. It's kinda amazing that they don't allow maintenance to be done on it to keep the noise down.

Still sounds pretty niffty though!

It was Therrin who put me onto the missile museum in the first place - well worth the trip. Oh, and it's just like the start of WarGames

Hi all. Yeah not really interested in the museum. I understand the reluctance to give out locations of sites. I was more wondering if anyone knows of the site im looking for. Is it still open or has it been covered up? Also am I looking in the right direction from Tucson? I don't want to drive to all 17 sites scattered all over and around tucson just to come up empty cause the sites been covered again. Thats alot of gas to spend.

All of the launchers were imploded as part of the nuclear-disarmament deal at the time. I know of one (very) intact Titan 2 base (sans launcher), but I don't believe that info is just being handed out by anyone who knows

And I've heard the museum is veryveryvery awesome and would be foolish to pass up if your close IMO

You should be able to find plenty of information on this site to point you in the right direction. Your just going to have to do a little digging. Good luck!

The treaty did allow for museaums, but the launcher had to have the door blocking the missile far enough that it would be destroyed upon launch, and it had to be pretty permanent. IE: several tons of concrete keeping the door from opening the rest of the way. Ellsworth D9 is very similar.

Yeah exactly, that's what I meant in my post. I suppose it does kinda look sneaky otherwise. Especially with all the original fuel trucks and tanker equipment and pumps and generators and everything on-site in their original layout positions.

I hadn't really realized till I did some looking around, there is quite a bit of info on those sites here on UER. Not to difficult to find.

I'm kinda pissed off that Tucson gets all those missle silos, and in Los Angeles we're just stuck with all the Nike bases. Not nearly as "fun" to me.

LOL. Yeah, I took the tour of the silo a while back and it was as explained, Excellent. Take the tour and get a feeling for what you are doing when you find a "secret" silo out in the desert. I have been out with friends to one of these, and it was pretty cool. Even better with having taken a tour of the preserved silo for reference.

now if I could only find one of the silos that are supposedly up here in Phoenix around Luke Air Force Base. one guy I have met swears he has found one that is only about a half mile away from a subdivision. personally I think he is full of pig shite. if anyone has heard of that one, PM me and I would love to take a trip.

Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door.
