| | | Open this? It is the lock for a metal grate that covers a manhole. The manhole gets into these utility tunnels I really want to explore. What would I need to open this up. It looks like a huge flathead screwdriver would do the job but I wondered if anyone else had any experience with these?

| | | That is exactly what it looks like. The manhole has a locking rod under it attached to the giant screwy thing. Turn the screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise using whatever works. I used a putty knife; the stiff type is essentially the huge flathead screwdriver you wanted.

| | | Sweet! Thanks for taking the time to let me know. I will get some pictures online once I get into the tunnels.

| | | Oh No! I went out tonight and got the twisty lock off. Only to find a key lock underneath that! Super disappointed. These tunnels go underneath the whole college campus. I guess the next plan of attack is to try and find a grate that they forgot to unlock.

| | | Last time I went though a manhole cover like that, I had a friend machine a special key to trip the spring arm inside. As soon as I pulled it up, a cloud of steam shot up and burned my hands, face and neck. All I'd say is to be careful to ensure it's not a steam valve or vent. I've never seen a cover like that go to a walkable tunnel.
