| | Bridge Rooms? < on 8/9/2010 6:20 PM >
| | | So while reading some UE stuff I came across some pics of an expedition into a bridge room and wanted to know what exactly a bridge room is and if many bridges/what types of bridges have them? I don't know if they are rare or just difficult to access, if anyones got any info that'd be great.

| | | If we are in fact talking about the same thing, bridge rooms are where the controls are for a movable bridge. Often times someone is sitting there monitoring traffic over and under the bridge and will control the bridge movement (i.e. draw, swing, lift, etc). Generally speaking they are not too exciting. The last time I saw inside one it basically had a couple 1/4 turn levers and red and green incandescent indicators, a phone and a TV (B&W). I haven't seen anything really new, so I don't know, maybe they are more interesting. It's nothing like an ATC tower even though some of them look that way from the outside. I'll try to dig out some photos and post them here.

| | | I was actually thinking more like the inside of certain bridges. I saw it on this post from maxaction, its old but its got some interesting pictures and got me interested in finding out if these were common. http://www.actionsquad.org/wabasha.htm
but thanks for the input. [last edit 8/9/2010 6:44 PM by stjbs4 - edited 1 times]

| | | Bridges need to be stiff so they make them thick, with I-beams or as a hollow box. This leaves a gap that can sometimes be accessed. You usually see them in concrete bridges, and large brick ones. Entry points are likely to have Master Locks in the US.

| | | If it's a big 'box' shape then it probably has a cavity.

| | | You'll find a lot of large concrete bridges have hollowed out, room like structures that are used to save money(less material to use) and also as a maintenance access. One place I used to visit in NJ was a well known viaduct that was famous for those very large, cavernous rooms. Here's a pic of it:
And yes, both the open areas and the column to the right are accessible.

You probably do. Otherwise, I have been inside of 'bridge rooms'. They are mildly interesting. Drains are definitely more interesting and photogenic.

| | | Infrastructure exploration is more uncommon than the exploration of abandoned places, and as such you won't see so much of it around here. Bridge cavities are almost off the radar to the general community, but that just means you'll probably be breaking new ground and really exploring when you head out looking for them. They're usually really easy to spot, access is the trick part. Since it's all active stuff the consequences are higher, though the chance of meeing security is pretty low. Short of a pair of boltcutters (and depending on your ethical stance), access will require that you're quite creative, observant and possibly carrying a rope or two. I've found some bridges to be easy, others impossible without going to ridiculous lengths (plasmacutter anyone?). Go for it

| | | I've been inside some pretty amazing bridge rooms, including the ones in that Action Squad story. Basically, a bridge room is the inside of a bridge. The large concrete structure of a bridge may look solid from the outside, but often it's hollow (especially the really big concrete bridges). Getting inside can be really fun, and the bigger bridges have enormous spaces inside. Accessing bridge rooms is very difficult most of the time. On occassion you will find a bridge room accessed by the easy task of popping a manhole lid, but those cases are rare and the bridge rooms in those circumstances are usually lame. The Wabasha Bridge discussed in the Action Squad story had manholes at the street levels, but they were like super duper manholes with massive bolts and locks and stuff, and would never be openable. As that story illustrated, access was gained via tunnels which led to some strange places that eventually led to a door that went out to a cliff and then back through another door into the bridge. Since the Republican National Convention in 2008, sadly, those bridge rooms have been securely locked (although the underground cliff is still accessible). A few months ago I explored a new bridge room with Slim Jim and Freak. It was a brand new bridge that had been under construction for a long time and was nearly complete. The span and space of the bridge room was a lot bigger than Wabasha Bridge and it was really cool to see. Sadly, access would be impossible to reproduce. We climbed up a construction scaffolding into a manhole on the bottom of the bridge which workers had been using to acccess the power conduits and things inside the bridge room chambers. With the scaffolding down, there is no way we can get back to that manhole a good seventy feet above the ground. So yeah, bridge rooms are fascinating because they are rare and hard to access.

| | | that sounds pretty awesome, thanks for all the info. There's a bridge near me that was the basis for the later built brooklyn bridge and while it doesn't really look as if it would have a massive bridge room in the base it has two huge stone towers that would be cool to get into. Im sure they are pretty secure but Im gonna try to check it out before I head back down to school.

| | | With a bit of luck, you can sneak in while they're still building them, before they go putting silly doors and locks on the things.

Roebling? Judging by the pink 10ft high graffiti on the first bridge support heading into Ohio, checking for bridge rooms probably isn't the most awesome idea ever.
Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing. |
