Lost Neighborhood - MOAR PICTURES!

Ok, this is going to be a relatively long post, maybe, I'm not sure yet. These are not my best photos. I decided to detail the place more than take artsy fartsy processed stuff. (although I'm sure I'll have that for later). This is a little community of abandoned houses that Snipe Hunter told us about. It's rad. It's about 30-40 houses and every single one of 'em if abandoned. Of course they are pretty well trashed, but there's still some interesting stuff to see. Thankfully, there is plenty of free parking:

We just pulled up into one of the garages and parked in there. There were weeds in the driveway, about enough to block the view of the car if you weren't looking too carefully. Most of the garage doors were off, so we had our pick of garages. We chose a modest brick single level ranch style.

Here's a pretty good representation of the houses we came across:

Maybe late 80's, early 90's cookie-cutter houses. However, some had really interesting floor plans. Most had at least one stone/brick fireplace, and all have a great 80's feel to them with faux brick walls, and old-school kitchens. However, in general, these were decent houses still. From what we could tell from papers, 2007 looked to be the latest occupancy, but most were 2005.

This one had a rad floor plan with 3 various levels, fireplaces, and of course dark wood paneling. Yummy.

On one of the fences were some plastic grapes. Over time, they were faded and absolutely baked by the sun.

A lovely stone giraffe (about 3 feet high) in the front yard of one of the houses.

SHIT! We had better not go outside then!

Actually, all the streets into this little subdivision of UE fun had signs posted claiming if we trespassed we would be prosecuted. However, I am sitting at my computer typing this, so obviously, they are lies.

The decor in this house was epic. Check out the ceiling light, the bile-colored drapes, and yes, that's wallpaper depicting an 'outdoorsy' scene.

It's odd. Some of the houses were quite nice. Sure, they were dated, but at their time, they were probably very nice upscale homes.

But, aside from all that, time had taken it's toll (and vandals) and not much was left but animal shit on the carpets, holes in drywall and lots and LOTS of flies.

Some style is classic and needs to be captured. Red counter-tops, orange wall paper, dark wood furnishings, mmmm.

All in all, it was a good day. We only went into about 20 or so of the houses. I think that was about half of it. There were neighboring houses that were occupied, so we didn't push our luck. Thanks for looking.

Thanks! too bad there wasn't much to see in the houses, but the floor plans were interesting. They were all pretty different.

yeah, thanks again! it's a great find. i'd be curious how you found out about it. i'd be more curious what happened to make the whole subdivision abandoned.

here's a couple more that I had a bit more time to play with:

not quite 'parked out front', but pretty close

the clouds were great that day

Haha oddly enough heard about it from a friend of a friend. Which doesn't help much for information on the location. =( I've been researching and trying to figure out what happened there, since I started visiting the subdivision.. but alas no answers. =( I have a hunch it could either be eminent domain (Not sure what they would need to put out there on top of a lot of people's homes.. when they have SO much open space... but you never know) , or a massive amount of foreclosures. My friend is convinced it's because of some Hispanic drug lord development... Which I doubt. ;)

Haha, I'm writing a paper on women's rights.

Damn Rob! that is the saddest basketball hoop I have ever seen. Wish i were in CO more than once a year. Although with all the foreclosures in AZ there may be tracts like this here before too long.

Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door.

Yeah, it's a cool place. we may go back when it's not so hot out. It was 90+ and SUNNY. We cut it short because of the heat.

Here's the full set if anyone wants to see the rest:

Thanks.

Seriously, the pics don't do it justice. It was really hard changing lenses and filters going in and out of houses all day in 90 degree heat, so I was off my game. But a cool cool place.

It seriously makes me wonder what happened there. As you said they would have been practically upscale homes. I'll have to try to find this place sometime.

And that poor poor basketball hoop. haha

Some were actually (would have been) quite nice. They would have been mid to upper level houses at the time. Plus, the amount of land and barns, stables, etc would have made them desirable as well. You would have been pretty isolated from neighbors. Strange stuff. I'll have to research more about it, but I'm not good at researching this kinda thing.

Robtastic, the last image is definitely my favorite. The off-kilter hoop and the visual texture of the wood make it. Were you using a polarizing filter? Because the sky is a lovely blue without washing out or causing the bball goal to look too dark.

Love the way you captured the details, Jai. Would love to explore a 5 1/2 minute hallway with you giving me tips on photography, though I suppose we'd need winter coats...

Thanks!

Actually, I just got a new polarizing filter and that was the first time using it. I got a Hoya Moose which is a circular polarizer with a warming filter 'built in'. It gets rid of the haze and brings out the sky without making everything feel cold and tinted. I usually process a lot of my pictures, but my favorites are usually untouched.

Yea, I like the processing you added to the basketball goal photo in your follow-up post, but I do agree that less processing is generally better (and harder!). I've only used plain polarizing filters, never with a warming filter. I'll have to look into that...

I shopped around for awhile for a quality polarizer that wasn't ridiculously expensive. I found the 'moose' to be pretty reasonable for a high quality filter and with the warming feature, it can really pop. Here's an untouched one from my last trip. The polarizer really made this shot.

Finally figured out where this place was after a "quick" scouting trip. We ended up going out on Labor Day. We parked in one of the garages that had a door still on it and shut the door. Worked great!

We got through about 10-12 houses and barns (Saw a huge great horned owl and a barn owl) before we noticed a few cars driving around. It was kind of odd because one car had a guy, his wife, and a little kid sitting in the back. I thought maybe they were lost but they kept driving up and down the streets, stopping several times for a few minutes. Of course I am expecting my first little one in a few months so that might be me in a year or two! ;) Family Urbex day!

Well, because of all the traffic (and the 60mph wind gusts) we decided to call it a day and come back another time. Maybe at night just to get a different feel.

Didn't have time to find the stone Giraffe so I can't be part of team giraffe yet.
