MacGyver, they don’t call you that for nothing eh? Good advice. I use the prussic knot all the time. It’s a way cheaper alternative to using mechanical ascenders, doesn’t eat your rope and I find it easy to use.

I've never had to use rope for climbing, although I've used them for other applications though... like lifting things up when I couldn't carry them while climbing.

not to sound like a stupid stoner who does nothing but smoke weed (on the contrary, i hate stoner culture) but the strongest ropes (and they may have been used up until Vietnam im not sure tho) were made from hemp. im pretty sure its outlawed now, and thats prolly a bit off topic but i thought it was interesting.

I wish I could take credit for this, but unfortunately, a friend of mine said:
They always pass it off like there is some HUGE government conspiracy to keep us from all making rope and pants out of hemp. As though the awesome power of hemp, if unleashed, would spell certain doom for the establishment. As if we are running out of other shit to make pants out of and we are in a state of emergency and the LONE answer is to bring hemp into the picture!

Nylon is stronger. End of story.

Now if only they could make rope out of spider silk...
But they're still working on that...

I'm not sure where you got your information, but hemp ropes are actually very weak. They used to be used simply because nothing else was available. With the advent of nylon, hemp is now entirely obsolete. Nylon ropes are so much safer, stronger and more reliable than hemp it's not even funny. Hemp's biggest probles are that it is organic, so it can rot and mold, and it is inconsistent in composition when compared to synthetics.

I'm not sure if I buy the hemp rope being weak thing. Ever owned hemp pants? hemp rope may have lower tensile strength but I have a sneaking suspicion it'd be less likely to fray. And the conspiracy has to do with much more than rope. nylon, stronger, but what does it come from like just about everything else in this world? Crude Oil. I defy you to look around where you're sitting right now without pointing out at least one thing (ASIDE from your computer) which is at least partially made from crude oil.

The reason people think there's a conspiracy around the hemp trade is that hemp is a renewable alternative to crude oil in a LOT of modern applications. Hemp oil resins for instance, not to mention the fact that ANY diesel engine can be retrofitted to run on natural oils, including canola oil, olive oil and, yes, hemp oil. The kits are relatively inexpensive and readily available over the net. The technology, given enough time and research could easily become advanced enough to be a viable alternative to petroleum based oils.

Anyway the hemp argument's a whole other can of worms so if anyone wants to retort or would like to know my sources please PM me. but I will leave with this one final question: Hemp has negligable THC content, the active constituent of Marijuana that makes it an illicit narcotic in the eyes of the law. Why then would Hemp be outlawed to the extent that it is when 1 acre of hemp, which can be harvested 2-3 times a season, produces as much pulp for paper as the same acre of 20 year old trees?

The answer: Dupont Chemical and William Randolph Hearst

And yes, there is a conspiracy to keep hemp illegal. A lot of very wealthy and powerful people would stand to lose a great deal of money if hemp was cultivated to it's full industrial value.

Also, guess who invented Nylon... Yep, Dupont Chemical

Whoah... settle down there, toughguy.
Once again, a scathing indictment has been misapplied.
I wasn't talking about you, as I am obviously on your side...

Anyway... enough about the hemp 'conspiracy'...
Spider silk.
You know, they're synthesizing spider silk out of goats' milk.
So far created a fabric lighter and stronger than Kevlar.
Rope's not far off...

Spiders kick ass.
So do scientists.

Yeah I've seen the spider-milk (ohhh, clever) before, it's pretty neat the genetics behind how they do it. I think, basically they use the silk-producing genes from a spider and splice them into a goat's milk-producing genes, which doesn't actually produce silk like a spider would in a string, but it produces the same sort of stuff floating around in the milk, then it's processed into something usable. Something along those lines. I always find genetics and genetic manipulation like that interesting, though somewhat disturbing. it's weird knowing that someday given the time for research we may be able to literally program how our children will turn out right down to their genetic makeup. "I want his mother's eyes, my nose, my sense of humour, and a laser built into his arm..." Ok, maybe not quite

A hemp rope is strong enough to climb on, but not for very long. Also, hemp streches quite a bit. I remember climbing on my dad's old Goldline rope, and it streched like a bungee cord. Not always the best thing for climbing.
UrbanCaver- If you ever want good experience with rope, PM me. We're in the same area, and me and a friend go to e-rock quite often.
