In the mid 80s, we bought a house off of roughly 102nd and Steel. There was nothing north or east of us for as far as the eye could see. We owned the first house built on Saint Paul st. My dad, when he was working on DIA, drove straight down 104th to the tower. I'm not old. I'm seasoned. From his rooftop, I believe one can still see the DIA "white tents" to the east. (though it's been years since I've been there) I remember watching tornados rip up 120th from lawn chairs in my back yard as a kid. There was nothing there but prarie dogs. It was the birth of a burb, and I hope never to return.
Where'd my oh there it is go?...damn. |

| | | The previous airport was pretty strange too. The controllers there voted it the worst Morale tower in the nation.
and they covered up a LOT of near miss accidents, some of the cover uppers names are on this board:
not to mention the previous airport was named after a mayor who was IN the KKK, and took orders from the Grand Dragon who forced this boy to show him his genitals and ordered him to marry a girl he'd been intimate with.
which story is somewhat told here:
here is that corpulent Grand Dragon
and here is his grave, which has a bullet gash in the door
It looks pretty bleak to me what they did with this HUGE swatch of land:
Historical runway markers piled in a corner.
And for all this work, they still don't know what to do with the tower.
It just sits there:
Empty as a pocket
History lovers might like the notion that from that airport, a target now, took off a plane in which a bitter young man put his mother on board with a suitcase full of dynamite. He killed about 40 people to collect the insurance. AND where did that plane go Down? Right about Here, 6 minutes after take off:

He is stated as the only being truly more powerful than the all-mighty Azathoth, and wiser than the all-seeing Yibb-Tstll. I, for one, welcome our limitless overlord. Will have to hunt for these things next time I'm going through DIA, some seemingly crazy stuff going on there.

That's Stapleton. Stapleton was indeed named after a KKK member who was also mayor not that I doubt the credibility of your research, which you obviously did. Living here now it's kind of hard to believe that kind of stuff was rampant around these parts. Btw, I like how your pictures tell a nice story, and some of them are very cool shots as well. Did you actually go into the tower? I hear security is practically zilch and the doors aren't even locked. I've been meaning to check it out myself, and actually on further recall I think they actually allow guided tours. But I also heard wild animals live inside it and that it's nasty and smelly covered in feces inside. [last edit 3/23/2011 5:37 AM by miirkat - edited 1 times]

| | | CLang Clang go the bells of interaction. And yes, this is about Stapleton the name of which I sought not to spider. It was YOU and your rant about HIPSTERS that I mistakenly BLURRED on in someone else's thread...........making them a convenient victim. I could have gone for "GLORY" as you put it.......and opened a thread...but I buried it in THIS one. Nameless. But now that it's so NAMED...........understated as I tried to make it,,,,,,, I can only say, it freaked me out GOOD to be in this spot. I went to Day Care and laid on a mat satiated with grape juice and Graham Crackers near this tower. It is AMONGST my earliest mememories. To ENTER it to whatever degree, or even just be right smack below it was an Urbex milesone for me....reaching back to feet pajamas. My Mother...dead in 1993, undertook the horrid task of driving "us kids" around that airport to see a new fangled "space shuttle" piggy backed on a jet. It was the worst traffic jam you can imagine, and my mother was no DRIVER. BUT it was DENVER's chance to GAWK at a SHUTTLE, and she braved it. She FEARED and HATED the traffic but she loaded us in the station wagon. AND like in super 8 film,,,,,,,,,,,,,,to this day, I see the space shuttle on the back of that jet,......snd I also see, the STAPLETON AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER.............all flikery and flaky in my mind. And now, in the magic of TIME and WILL, I see myself in the tower. And I had the bonus of being with an old high school friend when it happened. We done did tawk ABOUT the tower's early magma in our lives as we doodled around. Other THINGS were gleaned and learned...but..yeah.,.that's Stapleton tower, alright. And thru the magic of AIDS, CANCER and exhaustion we only did the BASE.......after 45 minutes of exhausting UPheaval. Talk about WHAT you HEARd of SECURITy ALL YOU WANT...we ended up in an exhausted heap, and we wish you well.

| | | Whatever happened to that general idle chat thread? Inb4 every thread is a general idle chat thread. I felt this may be of some interest to some people, so I'll leave this here: http://www.staplet...lowshipchurch.com/ It's an old hanger that has been recently renovated into a church. Kind of cool I guess, thoughts on the matter? Personally, I've always been amazed so many buildings can go unused for so long, and while I enjoy exploring them I always felt they could be of better use to people. In somecases I did consider attempting to squat once, but that was an utter failure.

eh, any resemblance to it's original purpose is gone. It's just a large modern concrete-floored building with large windows. I went by it awhile back and was saddened to see it all landscaped and new looking. You'd never know it used to be a hangar.

| | | For someone who is not a morning person, times like this feel surreal almost in an ethereal but not ethereal way. The natural lighting is perfect, and only quiet people are about. There is almost no noise, now I understand why birds are so eager to break the silence. It's like the calm before the storm I know as the rest of the day. There is an airport control tower in the middle of a fascist neighborhood. Look at how uniform everything is, except for this middle finger right in the middle of everything they are trying to achieve. Now people might lose themselves less inside of bullshit made up street names and houses that all look the same. TL;DR: This diminished structure that once helped guide planes, now helps guide people outside of the fascist labyrinthine structure known as Stapleton.1.
