| | Anyone mind guiding a UE newbie around MD < on 7/4/2010 10:08 PM >
| | | I'm in Ellicott City, MD, and happened to find this site interesting. I'd like to know if there is anybody more experience in UE in the area who can guide a newbie like myself to some locations? When I refer to myself as a newbie I mean to UE purely. I've had enough climbing experience and have done parkour and some infil for a while. I can certainly carry my own weight in an expedition, but somebody more experienced to point out a few locations would be great. Also being a high-schooler I lack things such as... A CAR. makes getting places difficult...

Anyone over 18 isn't going to want to accompany you. Simply because they can get in much more trouble for accompanying a minor

| | | Wait, you actually plan on getting caught? I call that "doing it wrong"... and at first glance I pass for 19-20, so I don't think that should really be an issue.

Don't plan on getting caught, but be ready for it and make it as painless as possible. No lockpicks, no entry tools, and nothing that turns it from "buddies goofing off" to "is this a kidnapping?" Good luck.

It doesn't matter how old you look if you get caught. And yes, everyone, even self proclaimed "1337 urbex ninjas" can be caught. Regardless, i've explored with minors at high risk locations before.

Sometimes, it's a matter of proving yourself trustworthy first, rather than just asking for help. Just sayin'. How do we know you aren't a vandal who's going to go back later and ruin a place?, or a police officer, etc? go out, explore, post some write ups and some photos, go to some regional meets, and everything will fall into place later. People are cautious of people who just randomly ask for help, with good reason most times. Just go off your instincts, jump right in, and explore/climb something [last edit 7/4/2010 11:42 PM by Liska - edited 1 times]

| | | Dude I'm not trying to tell you to quite before you've even begun, just that people probably won't eagerly step forward. I do places solo all the time, and honestly your chances of being caught are much slimmer if you are by yourself. Take some pictures, post some threads, show us what you got, and I know you'll find some people to explore with. Also, hit up your friends. I've found even my friends who aren't as freakishly obsessed with this hobby as I am will still happily accompany me on some easier explores. But getting butt-hurt at peoples skepticism/reluctance definitely will not help your cause. Just sayin. Good luck and don't give up

I don't care that tone of voice doesn't convey, I specifically wrote that I was joking!
In that case, can anybody recommend any locations around central MD that'd be worth my time?

That's what people are talking about. Asking for locations and what not. 90% of us all started this hobby by doing it by ourselves, doing research online, and going out on our own to find locations. You should do the same.

I recommend google and keeping your eyes peeled at every corner. Some of the coolest places I have ever explored were always right in front of my face. I just never noticed them before cause I either wasn't paying attention or I was looking too hard. There is abandoned shit everywhere if u just look for it. Might not be the most epic TB ward you've ever seen, might just be a gas station or a house but its a start. baby steps dude... Be careful, thoughtful, respectful and have fun.

| | | haha, alright, I've had a couple houses, an abandoned motel, and the Enchanted Forest park in Ellicott City, MD.... I don't tend to take photos though, nor did I find anything photo worthy... Cell phone photos, but doesn't matter, it exemplifies that it's lame. (this is the motel.)

haha, why would I care? People aren't very attentive of things happening on rooftops... Here's a picture of a school from a school during school hours(13:48)... this is ~65 feet up
and a supermarket, just because.

| | | haha, yeah, my parkour training ground is a construction storage area. No photos from any though. Also there were three construction sites in the area previously which were interesting for a while, but they're all finished now. One was a bank. and I spent a night in another one... big bathtubs make great beds! They were relatively small and not very exciting as a result.

| | | If I had to give you any advice, it would be just go out and do it. Find a way. Find a friend with a car that is as interested as you, or GET your friends as interested as you are. I've been in your position. Hell, I am STILL in your position. I'm also in high school, I also don't have a car, I also am a little lost in this hobby. I still have yet to meet up with more than one UER member, and that's not because I wouldn't like to. The Urban Exploration community is a very closed community. Get in chat, make friends, stick around. The people that have put so much into this hobby want to see you do at least a little bit of the same before they can consider you really dedicated to the hobby, including all of the ethics and morals that it carries. Believe me when I say all of this, I tried the 'somebody guide me around' route just like you. It doesn't work. Make a few friends here, attend a regional meet (major step forward), and eventually make your way to Full Member status.
