Or similar petrol solvent. MEK too.
It's worse when it's a 25 pound chunk of roofing tar lying on the road at night.

I'm guessing the least toxic and irritating would be the halogenated hydrocarbon's used as inhalation surgical anaesthetics (halothane, methoxyflurane etc)...probably also the most expensive and difficult to get thought.

Toluene is far more toxic than acetone, MEK, or turpentine.
Diesel and especially gasoline (up to 20% by volume) contain the notorious carcinogen benzene, and gasoline may contain other toxic additives.
Gasoline is a real fire/explosion hazard as well, never use gasoline to clean. A small static spark is all it takes.

Yeah, gasoline and diesel will probably have carcinogens. So does roofing tar that one is trying to remove.
Gasoline indoors is a big no no, but if you pour a few drops of it out of a petrol can outside, I doubt you will be immolated. Diesel of course, is safe in that regard, IIRC, flashpoint is >700deg.
