UBC Steam Tunnels

I've been at UBC for several years now, and of course have heard the rumours of extensive networks of tunnels going across campus, connecting all sorts of buildings.

My own investigations have lead me to believe that this 'massive network' is massively exaggerated, and in fact consists of only one tunnel, connecting to a building on only one end.

Can anyone shed any light on rumours of tunnels at UBC? I'm curious as to whether all the stories stem from this one passageway and have been embellished through years of telling stories.

As far as I know there are far more than one tunnel, but most of them are locked/ under CCTV surveillance.

Interesting. Have you actually seen more then one? I've heard stories time and time again about multiple tunnels, but when I ask people for details they always say they forgot, give details about the one I know exists, or claim that they 'heard it from someone reliable'.

As for CCTV coverage, somehow I doubt that. My experience with UBC is that they rarely use cameras, certainly not on those sort of areas. Fortunately, being a public institution, they're also required to put up highly visible signage in any area with cameras.

There's a bunch of UBC steam tunnel stuff in the UE DB.

50% of ubc's steam network is contained in tunnels, the rest in buried pipes. but you knew that, right...
as for cameras, well you'll just have to check it out eh?

Not in the part I can see as a new member, apparently. All there is a single location of the steam plant itself. With no real information on tunnels.

I actually have reason to suspect that far far far less than 50% are contained in tunnels. This would be substantiated by the copies of the UBC Utilities diagrams that I have, as well as cursory surveys of a handful of manholes.

Cameras, again, I have checked out a lot, and my results have indicated that I don't need to be concerned.

My dad used to go in them all the time when he was in university. Back then he said he got in through a manhole or something in the bushes by the medical building. I'm sure its long been sealed up by now, but maybe worth poking around in that area?

Thanks for the links, Zikan. I'd seen the first one before, but not the others. The first article looks like it has pictures from the segment between U.Blvd and IRC, while the third article looks like under U.Blvd (see below)

Again, I'm not disputing the existence of a tunnel. I'm just wondering if there is only the one that my evidence points towards, or if there actually is/was a network of multiple tunnels.

Jester, is that the IRC sub-basement connection? That horizontal pipe looks familiar.

Not a clue actually. Having been there in the dead of night, not even sure which buildings we were near at our entry point, and wandering through a few tunnels this way and that... I have no idea.
