Hearing Aids

Hi, I have been lurking around here for around a month now, and have been interested in Urban Exploration for quite some time. Unfortunately, I live in an area where there are not alot of good sites to explore, and the police are VERY alert do not look they would take kindly to trespassers. Add this to the Mexican gang problem in my area, and you have a potentialy disasterous situation. I usually carry a small knife with me and a semi-heavy flashlight with me, but that is little confort when you know that 5 or more people might be able to sneak up on you. So, I have been researching ways to protect myself. While going through a hunting catalog, I saw an item I believe was called a "GameEar". Supposedly it amplifies sounds, sort of like a hearing aid, but it much cheaper (and larger). Then, while going through some hunting supplies my grandfather has, I found one of them still in the box. I tried it out once, not expecting it to work real well, but I could hear the kitchen clock ticking in the garage, when I can barely hear it from the kitchen. It seems to only amplify quiet noises, so I think it might work with footsteps and the like. Do any of you have experience with a device like this in Urban Exploration?

Can't say I've ever used one in a UE situation, but I can't see it being too useful in an urban environment. Whereabouts are you from, by chance? If there's gang trouble in large amounts, I'd say stay away from most abandoned buildings and such, but it's your call. Don't want to stumble upon a meth lab or anything.

Anyways, hello and welcome.

I am in the California Bay area, and the problem isnt THAT bad, it's just that I like to be cautious. Gangs are not the only reason that I think these could be useful, I just think they would be good for detecting if anyone (or dog) is in a building.

Actually, I think one of those can be very helpfull. Maybe not in a drain, but if you do find yourself in a building and you know there is a security guard looking for you, it might come in handy.

There wouldnt be any point in keeping it in all the time while you are exploring, but since the thing is so small, you mind as well keep it in your pocket just in case.

I hear about as well as Helen Keller so I could probably use one of those things for when I go out on my own. Any link as to where I could find one?

I think this is something like what you guys are talkin about: http://search.ebay.ca/search/search.dll?query=spy+ear&maxrecordsreturned=300&salocatedincountry=2&ht= 1&sosortproperty=1&sorecordsperpage=50&from=R10&BasicSearch= not too pricey either

I used to own a bionic ear with the parabolic dish. It looks like a flashlight connected to a set of big ear muffs (without the dish). I could put the flashlight sound amplifier up against my ceiling in my old apartment and hear the neighbors above me (worked better than the old glass to the door trick). However, outdoors, every time the wind would blow, you couldn't hear shit. This was about 8 years ago and technology moves quickly but never use these outdoors on a windy day.

In my previous post, I did say that a Hearing Aid might come in handy -but at $200, I wouldnt bother getting one for UE'ing (for those who dont have one already).

For the majority of explorations, all you need is a reliable flashlight, some bland clothes you dont care about, and a good pair of shoes. I guess you can carry one in your pocket if you already have a "Game Ear", but I wouldnt bother spending that much money on an item that wouldnt be used all that often.

I got one it also had a disk but i dont use the disk so its alot smaller. I might take the case off and put it in my flashlight. So i only have to carry my flashlight. Obviously with a seperate switch. Now I must go and design it.

Ear phone things...

I saw them today.
they make things like sounds of people's foot steps and stuff louder but when a really loud noise comes it shouts off all sound.

I think it might have use in UE with knowing where guards and stuf is.

Anyone know what I am talking about?

Yea, I used to have one and it worked pretty well. Especially in urban areas where background noise might make far-off footsteps hard to tune in on.

Unfortunately, I can't make any specific brand recommendations since the ones I had where these cheap $5 ones that broke a few weeks after I got them. But I have looked around a little for other brands and there seems to be a plethora of these things out there. I even say a pair for $20 that looked pretty good

Ewww, I take offence at your posting what is quoted above. There ARE many good places in the SF-Bay area to UE! Look in the UE DB and go to the California pages. There is a wealth of info there for those willing to use it. A lot of us in the area have contributed quite a bit to the DB. I admit, not nearly as much as maybe the Canada DB, but there are many in the DB. For starters, try PHSH in San Francisco. It is GREAT UE in every sense of the word!

Hey I remember once while UEing, my friend had the very cheap kind, he bough it in a school suply store for $5. And he was so scared he stayed outside and he could listen to the cars going trough a road in the other side of the 50 meters of trees (trees absorb sound). But he only used it to keep us alert in case a car drove trough the dirt road (police?), it would take the car 2 min to go cross it, by then he would had heard it long before it came in contact with the dirt. But then again those were cheap and wind messed up the sound. So you cant use it as a reliable piece of equip., your footsteps will sound extremly loud in them. Also if you have something solid (piece of steel) you can put it in the ground and put the thing with tape around it to hear bibrations on the floor. Like cars n trains.

A school supply store sold an electronic sound amplifier for five bucks? Lol what for, so kids could smoke in the bathroom and hear teachers coming down the hall?

It was more like a toy,(cheap kind) and it siad to be used for listening to toher people's conversations etc. The name was Spy Ears. Here they are the exact ones that my friend bought and they work prety much like the more 20$ expensive ones.

http://www.wholesale-from-me-2u.com/spyear.html

They are really cheap, so you might want to buy 3 or 4 so that all your team of explorers have one and you can listen to yourselfs across the building and anything suspicius.

I remember having a decent sound amplification device that looked like a transistor radio and it worked fine. It was pretty cheap, if I remember correctly, that was at least 10 yrs. ago. Funny thing was, people always thought I was listening to a walkman, so they would be even more careless about what they said around me. Was great for listening to what people said behind your back.
