Reciently last month I took the drive and hike through the snow to Belden, Co. Didn't have much time to go into the buildings as for one of the water treatment men were in the area so heres ficks of the outside and the trek in.

From my research Belden is the community where the Eagle Mine is located.

Right. Belden is the mining camp primarily around the Eagle Mine, at the bottom of the cliffs in the canyon. Gilman is the town at the top of the cliffs.

apparently someone shut gilman down. They say the land is contaminated or something or other... so it might be a hike to get in to it, but so worth it.

I'm also planning on spending a few days up in that area here very soon. Thinking it might be better in the snow, less people to deal with

The Eagle Mine was shut down by the EPA in 1984 due to excessive pollution and the town was ordered evacuated.

The last picture in the album of the trestle are actually the piping built by the water treatment plant to pump water out of the mine. So if your looking at the trestle and behind you to the left is were the plant is and the direction facing in the picture is towards Belman. Dont try and drive down there. I saw one of the two gates and its a doosie. They welded big 12 inch metal spikes on the front of it so if the gates rammed, your radiator or engine block is f***ed. Another thing, the treatment plant workers do go down there on the regular for water samples pulled from the mine and the river right about where the first tunnel is, so do look out and be careful.

Aw, you didn't get to see any deep snow huh?

But I didn't even make it this winter so you get a lot of credit for that. Most folks wouldn't dare go during the frozen months. As your photos show the area is plowed for subcontractors and EPA crews though, so they're the only other humans you'd be likely to run into...

I drove past Gilman on my way out of Vail and there really wasn't much snow up there this year, at least not in December. Summit and Eagle Counties have had a very dry year up until the end of March.

So I may or may not be making a trip back to CO anytime soon. Now looks like it'll be July, but Gilman is at the top of my list of places to return to when I go!

I suspected that I'll make a trip to gilman when this semester is over. So in a few weeks. Bring a tent, I think I'd like to spend the night up there in the mountains.

Better than a tent, just sleep on the roof of a building.

Yeah last year the snow sucked, but that was a few thousand feet above Gilman. Akron, did it ever melt above the tree line last summer? We saw a truck burried by the London Mill. That was end of June!

There should be far less this year, its been dry up there until recently so there isn't much of a base.
