City of Eaton Now Owns the Sugar Factory

This might be old news to some of you, but it appears that the city of Eaton now owns the Great Western Sugar factory due to liens on the property from unpaid taxes. They seem to want to move quickly in cleaning it up and tearing it down. The article makes it sound like Longmont is close to follow.

Anyone been out there recently? Any more activity than normal?

Robtastic, Drewski and I went up there last weekend, and yeah there have been changes. There's a brand new fence surrounding the compound now that wasn't there a month or so ago when we'd been last. Something is in the works it seems. How terribly sad that it will most likely be demolished. I have a particular fondness for it, as it was our first true UE experience.

Nope, she's right, it's Eaton. We went up there a few weeks back and it was wide open like, er, well, yeah. But now its fenced and boarded up quite tight. I mean, not TOO tight, but tight.

Oh for fuck's sake. First Gold Medal Flour burns, then they start tearing up what's left of Gates, now this. Goddamn, I am so fucking done with the outrageous urban renewal in this goddamn country. Eaton's a tiny, tiny town surrounded by wide-open land, what the hell do they even need the Sugarmill site for anyhow? Goddamn.

Yeah, this was one of my first explorations as well. Been there many times. Sounds like they are talking with Union Pacific about setting up a hub that will serve northern colorado. Pretty disappointing, but I doubt they will move very quickly. It is government after all, and cleanup costs will likely be more than the small town can handle unless the railroad is interested enough to help with the costs.

Deertrail silo as well. Pretty soon all we will have left is old farm houses and top secret government barns of doom.

interesting, to bad its going down that path. Eaton is a fairly cool location. Im sad to see it go. There has been a BUNCH of work and scrapping out at the titan. They actually found copper pipe in there! and someone drilled into the tunnel that goes out to the antenna silos. I wonder what the heck they were doing in there to warrant the drilling.

Wait.... Titan, or Eaton Sugarmill? They can bulldoze Sugarmills, but Titans will always be get-innable, one way or another.

i was referring to the titan. Seems like quite a bit of "tampering" has recently occurred in the years that i have gone there. Something is up, not sure what but it is. Im not saying it will be gone in a week, im saying its possible it may be much harder to do in the near future. Someone is doing major work out there for some reason or another. metal has been scrapped out of there and a hole has been drilled from the surface into one of the tunnels. its hard to believe there was anything left worth taking but someone has. Just a suggestion to see it as soon as they can so they can see it as it has been, not more molested than before....

You've been out since we went and they're pulling scrap? Huh, that's surprising. That drilling was weird but otherwise there was just little piles of metal lying around but nothing major.

That's a bummer, I thought maybe it would be my last visit there

Yeah, I've seen the same. But Quarantine is right, for as long as the titans are physically in the ground there will be entrances found and/or made. The access might be a bit involved, but that's just more interesting, right?

from my trip a few months ago the titan has definite work going on, and things seem to be changing. Its sad to hear Eaton is planned to go away, saw evidence of work there last time also.

We best find some new places, everything is going away...

kimbercules and i just got back from the titan this weekend (deer) and although we've never really been there, it didn't have any evidence of work being done. there was NOTHING around (well, other than the houses). but no equipment, dirt being moved, etc. it looked pretty untouched as far as construction goes. we're gonna go back soon just in case though.
