We saw that path, but decided to look farther along the main path. I'm busy all weekend, but I can try to get up there next weekend.

Im not really sure its trip worthy, just a big block, but if you are going just to explore you should be able to find more if you follow that path.

Found some kind of tube containing a role of signatures, did any of you place it there? If not then it looks like quite a few people have been there.

It probably is. N250cc's GPS picked up a few around that location.

Went exploring today, found what at first glance seems to be a man made hill. Went to the top and found it was perfectly flat and rounded and had a great view point of the harbor. Maybe once a gun emplacement? It was right next to the concrete foundation.

It's possible, but unlikely. If it were a gun emplacement, you would see a bit of an indentation in the top flat area with a circle of bolts/nuts. More likely to be a former watchtower base. Similar to what's at York Shore Battery I would think.

The foundation in the woods is the remains of the 18th Anti-Aircraft Battery, an installation built in 1942.

It was a fake anti-aircraft battery, part of a larger plan to make the Germans believe Halifax had heavier anti-air defenses than it actually did. At that time, it was thought possible that Germany might develop carriers or bases allowing bombing raids on North America. Some maps from the 50s still show "18th AA Battery Road" running near the site, which was another part of the deception.

If you look around the concrete remains you'll see the circular earthen remains of the "gun pits", where telephone poles painted black were mounted to stand in for guns. There are some other ruins around the area too, but not much worth looking at.

Also I don't suppose you have any information on the reservoir/tunnel near the foundation?

I haven't seen that one, but there are quite a few drainage tunnel systems in the area. The ones down below Connaught Battery seem fairly elaborate, with multiple access points big enough for a ladder.

It's pretty flat by the AA battery though so it might be something else.

It's probably a water reservoir for a former quarry that's near it.

Also do you have any historic pictures of the location? Or maybe maps like the one you were talking about?
