I'm not sure what it was for, but it leads to a ladder that leads to the top of it {you can see the ladder in the first pic}.

| | | This is (was) the Castlewood Dam, it failed spectacularly during a storm in 1933- I don't recall when it was built but it was only in use for a short time. That tunnel was more than likely one of the spillways; during the storm (the story goes), the designer of the dam was on-site and went out onto the structure to open the spillways and prevent the reservoir from overtopping. While doing this he felt the dam shake violently and got outta dodge pronto, shortly thereafter the dam collapsed and dude frantically telegraphed Denver to warn there was a flood headed their way.
