According to Wikimapia, the structure at the center of http://wikimapia.o...06263&z=17&l=0&m=b is:

Entrance to underground section of Arizona Canal Diversion Channel (Phoenix)

Entrance to an underground flood control channel, approximately 36 feet wide and 25 feet tall, extending for nearly two miles from 40th Street to 24th Street along the north side of the canal.

Do any of you guys know anything about this thing? I have nothing to do with the area, so maybe this is old news, but it sounds kind of exciting and I can't find any relevant posts...

Haha

The 1.97 mile underground portion of the ACDC that you are referring to is actually a somewhat popular attraction for the residents of the local upscale neighborhood, as well as other residents of the Phoenix metropolitan area that have heard about it through word of mouth. From May through October, that section of the ACDC is a roosting habitat for thousands of Mexican free-tail and western pipistrelle bats and is recognized as such by the Arizona Game & Fish Department. Shortly after sunset the bats come out of the tunnel to feed on insects, and the site is really something else!

That sounds really really cool! I wish I lived in the Phoenix area. Is it normally dry inside? I hope I get a chance to check it out next time im in the area.

"Is that the entrance to the drain?" "Yeah" "It's right behind the police station." "Oh. Maybe we should go to a different one..."

Despite the assumed large amounts of bat shit, my guess is that it stays relatively dry. I'm sure there's plenty of water in it right now though

Watch out for the cameras, looks like at least one set that I can see in Google Earth.
