Beware the Bloo Goo
| | | AZ Subterranean Adventures < on 1/8/2010 5:38 AM >
| | | A belated image dump of the things that my group of friends and me find out in the desert. These are the picts taken by my friends and me (I'm the one with the headlamp) of our visit to the Turkey Creek Gold Mine. Located near the town of Cleator, AZ it was in operation from around 1900 till the 60s. The site consists of various building foundations and the one standing building pictured. The main building is 2 story with 2 rooms and was partially burned (along with the bridge across the creek) due to arson in 2005. The main audit (not pictured) is east near the building which is sealed with plywood and thick foam at ground level and is surrounded by some chain fence. The boarding is rather flimsy and anyone determined enough can easily smash thru with a shovel. I shot it a couple times, tho. The secondary audit is below the building near a tailings pile. This is the means by which we entered. The third audit, which I refer to as the exit, is east of the building near a large piece of red painted equipment. It consists of a partially filled entrance with a large corrugated pipe allowing access. The pipe is bared with one being already dislodged by a previous visitor allowing us to escape.

| | | Here are the pictures (the images are not the best as I used my old 3MP camera and had to crank up the exposure in PS so as to be able to see in the dark) of the De Soto Copper Mine. Also located near Cleator, produced from around 1870 to 1972. No standing structures remain of the site. The main audit is very open and all of the drifts are horizontal and easy to navigate, tho very muddy. The drifts lead to various stopes (rooms where the ore is dug out) which are massive and flooded just a few feet down creating immensely deep underground lakes. Tho very moist, most of the wooden supports and structures are unrotted and intact and looked like a mine ride from an amusement park. Evidence of the copper can be seen leaching out of the walls and collecting on the floor as blue goo. Beside this tunnel, the surrounding mountain is honey combed with audits and tunnels. At the top of the mountain there is a massive stope making the mountain look as if hollowed out. I could not get a close look into this chamber as is was very steep and a sheer drop of at least a 100 feet. I reckon it was about 200-300 feet across as I could not see to the other side. The mine was known for its tram system which used a series of pulley towers (mostly collapsed) along the tops of the rides which transported ore buckets down to the ghost town of Middleton along Crown King Rd (pictures of which can be seen on Google Earth).

| | | Nice! The blue goo is pretty weird, I've never seen that before.
"Is that the entrance to the drain?" "Yeah" "It's right behind the police station." "Oh. Maybe we should go to a different one..." |

Every time a lady starts bitching about my gun collection I tell her to get out a piece of paper and give me a list of all her shoes, purses, and jewelry.

| | | Yet another one I ned to get to, although I think I was at the turkey but never did the mines. At any rate, I'm ready for exploring, maybe even make it to Sunflower yet. I still need to lead the group out to Parker and hit some of the mines around the desert bar.

| | | Mindat.org http://www.mindat.org/loc-3293.html , GoogleEarth and a trusty GPS are the best resources to finding these places. Some of the trails get pretty rough but I haven't been to a place that my old 2wd Explorer hasn't been able to get to.

| | | More adventures from the desert. Here are pictures from the many holes from the San Domingo wash near Morris Town/Wickenburg. An area rich in placer deposits with much of it is under claim from hobby prospectors and panning clubs, the wash was seen to many mining operations. The large building, which is a mill for possessing ore, was built to service the many mines around it. The structure itself is labeled on GoogleEarth as the Rub Goldburg mine, which I could not find any records of a mine with that name. It is also labeled in the wrong spot on GoogleEarth, being another mile up the wash. The closest mine to it is the Picacho View Mine located along the ridge to the north east which mine for transition metals such as Niobium and Tantalum. I was unable to get there as it was getting dark and I spent the rest of the day getting my Explorer unstuck trying to get to it. This is a really fascinating structure as it is fairly good condition, besides a few bullet holes (which I added a few with my Tokarev), and also still intact as per usual when mine operations shut down they usually tear everything down and scrap it.

A Rube Goldberg machine is one of those crazy chain-reaction contraptions/puzzle things. Heres a vid with some Rube Goldberg machines http://www.youtube...atch?v=9D3wAA4448U That processing facility definitely looks like a Rube Goldberg machine I'm not surprised someone nicknamed it that

| | | This will be my last post as I will be deploying soon. Here are the pictures from the expedition to the so called Swastika Mine. Located near the lustrous town of Cleator, it sits up in the Bradshaw mountains near many other mine sites. I could find much about this place other than being another old gold mine. The area is currently private property which includes an old house and gate that separates the trail from many of the mine audits. The house is interesting to look in as it appears as tho everything was just left as it is: Clothes and sheets on the beds, and food stuffs and dishes on the counter. From the look of it the place appears to have been unoccupied for some years and the food cans all expired in 2007. The area around it compromises of several mine audits, an old truck and some building foundations. What building left is a shed with shelves filled boxes of drilled core samples. Tones of them. The place is littered with these rock cylinders. The mine tunnels are open and in good condition including all the timbering and scalable ladders to different levels of the mine. It also includes the old cartrails and I found an old Maxwellhouse coffee can from 1913.

Hope all goes well.
And from the second picture it looks like you learned lesson from the blue goo! No more chances!
