Does it piss anyone else off when they see little niche things like "extreme" sports, coffee shops, lofts, SUV's etc. become boxed, sterilized, trademarked and sold off to people who are willing to spend any amount of money to be "hip"? |
Our economy is based on continually finding new ways to make more money. So anything that has the possibility of appealing to a lot of people is immediately copied and sold for as high a profit as the market will bear. Innovation quickly becomes trendy, hip, and popular. It's sickening to see things twisted around like that, but at the same time it creates the need for continued innovation. If there wasn't something for us to rebel against then we'd never bother to do anything.

The problem is that, to stay "hip", one has to continually change to whatever's considered cool by either the "hip" group, or the "outsiders" group. Either way, you're conforming to a group. See: goth kids who claim to hate "the system" but end up all dressing alike, listening to the same "obscure" bands, etc.
