Thanks for posting, Slice. Sign the petition for what it's worth. There are also some interesting personal anecdotes on the theatre from different time periods. Personal stories that you won't find at the archives.

Hmmmm... on that note, how about signing the petition?

Good one slice, I just signed, almost 1400 so far. Even if it does get destroyed, at least those pigs who destroyed it will know some people cared. Here's hoping 'bottom of the ninth' pans out here, I don't know the current status.

Situation hasn't changed any from what I've heard. I think it would take a miracle at this point, but hey, you never know.

Not that I'm for it being torn down, but if successful in preventing it from being demolished, what's the plan for it?

The plan was to completely restore the theatre. The developer owned the 4 adjoining buildings to the west as well. In addition to the theatre restoration, there was to be social housing, market housing, retail and some rehearsal space.

A large project can have a great impact in that neighbourhood. Look at the change occurring in the 100 block West Hastings for a great example. When the Woodwards project was completed on the north side of the block, other developers/owners immediately began work on thier holdings on the south side of the block. Many heritage buildings are being renovated there as we speak.

Well hey I believe in miracles. More so in fact than most normal people should. I think this would take more than a miracle though, like maybe a miracle and a half. Like two miracles. Demolition by neglect, my favorite thing to hate, and prevalent and on top of its game in this instance. Sick waste of our built heritage.

If that thing in your AV stays airborne more than 5 minutes you have good reason to believe in double miracles and more

Srysly, it's an intriguing photo, and I agree what you wrote about built heritage and demolition by neglect. Would say though, developers who tear down significant heritage structures are worse. (Then they make a parking lot and we have nothing to explore)

However, it looks like the Woodwards project is something to celebrate, assuming they created as many low cost housing units as promised. I used to park in their garage in the mid 80's for two bucks a day, should have gone in the store more often.

Cheers,

A.

Indeed, in this case I blame the City and not the Developer who poured thousands into this gem to keep the decay at bay. It gives me a sick feeling every time I hear it raining outside, to know that all that water is just pouring in thru the roof.

Walked past it many many times in the past couple weeks. Sad to see her in such rough shape. Condo's in a few years.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

I think I may have to agree with you. How long has the theater been abandoned? How sound would it be to fix it up? The other big question is, given all the other concert halls and theaters in and around that are in better shape, what would the Pantages offer them that say...The Vogue or The Stanley couldn't?

Its sad to loose such a historical building. I suppose the only thing that can be hoped for is that the developer can incorporate some of the facade into whatever does get built.

Theatre has been dark since the early 90's. The attraction to the Pantages project was that it would have supposedly filled an existing void for medium sized theatre venue space in Vancouver, also, the valuable rehearsal space that would have been built into the project. The other reason, of course, was to start a positive change in arguably the worst city block in Vancouver.

I can't see them retaining the facade in any new construction. One of the hallmarks of early Pantages Theatres was a very plain exterior hiding the very ornate interior.

With enough money anything can be fixed, it's all in the price tag. Even before the Fire Department chopped in the roof causing all the rot, it was going to cost the developer several million dollars to renovate. I think it would be safe to assume that you could add several million onto that now.

The east side cultural center, now called the "culch", has had tons of money dumped into it...and is in a trendy area. Seems to me, the pantages plan was pre emptied by the "coolness" of the drive area. I used to live across the street from the east van small venue. Sadly, skyrocketing rents after the completion of the renovations, and an ubercool hipster neighbourhood with it's 6$ coffee, and organic produce fruit stands forced me to move to a cheaper area. it got even worse with the olympics announcement a several years ago. RIP to both, the culch had a much better feel back in the day as well. Too bad, with 90% cuts to arts funding, by the current BC gov, both may be sitting empty for a while. GO CANADA!!

I certainly agree that the city is to blame for this one. By mentioning demolition by neglect I refer to the fact that this was allowed to happen in the first place. It's indeed a painful irony to have a developer's plans to retain a significant piece of Vancouver's history thwarted by the city it sits in. Here in Victoria a group of highly historic buildings owned by a shrewd single person are terribly neglected and, in a reversal of roles, it is council that is trying to keep them standing.

The historic and cultural significance of the Pantages is really what was at stake. The exterior was never meant to be a showpiece, yet the interior elements were otherworldly. When you add to the equation just how surprisingly intact those elements were, after all those years, well THAT was indeed something worth saving. That, and the age it represented, well in another world maybe we should have restored the Pantages INSTEAD of the Vogue. But it is what it is. I once spearheaded the moving and retention of a lovely 1929 dutch colonial in Burnaby that saw it relocated to a site holding a 1922 craftsman. I wondered for a while just what the hell I was doing saving one house at the expense of another.

And of course MogliDog is right. Anything is salvagable, with a price. There was a stately home in New West, on the corner of 8th & Queens that I helped out at. The Galbraith house. Vacant for over 20 years and ready to fall down. The roof had given out, causing dormers to crash into the third floor. The kitchen and other rooms at the back were so badly rotted that the entire wing was pulling away from the main structure. One more snowfall, of no great magnitude, would have seen a 7,500 sq ft tidal wave of splintered wood come spilling out over its granite fences and onto the road. Yet two people bought it. And saved it. And lost their shirts and had to sell it, but it was a labour of love and they always said they had no regrets.

Ya, the doors are now open, looks like they're not even looking after it anymore. Be very ver careful if you venture in there, the back of the theatre at the stage area is now completely unstable due to rot from the water pouring in thru the hole in the roof.
