| | | You beat me to it! Try photomatix. Not that I'm a photography pro or anything, but that's what I use, and it's very user-friendly.

| | | HDR sucks. Just nail the exposure and you should be good. You can always pull detail out of the shadows so just check the histogram to make sure you down lose your highlights.

| | | This is a good place to start:
And now for even better results you should give the "bracket and blends" method a try. (you can use photomatrix) http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=49601
Why not HDR?
HDR is a process with the same goal as bracket and blends, but it relies on your computer to make critical decisions about how to construct the image, whereas bracketing and blending relies on your eye. The simple answer to this question is: control. Bracket and blends give you greater control over how the final image looks.

| | | There is no skill in HDR. You are literally doing yourself a disservice by putting any time into "learning" about it. Read a book instead.

| | | Don't bother with HDR unless you can compose and expose a good photo in-camera first. You're getting waaaaay ahead of yourself and playing with useless tools before you have a grasp on your camera. Slow down, just play with the camera itself for now. You can't make a bad photo look good with post-processing, and HDR is one of the few post-processing techniques I know that can make a good photo look bad. Just camera for now would be a better use of time.

| | | as someone whos jumped on & off the HDR bandwagon several times, I feel confident saying that, for the most part, its just a waste of time. Sure there are a few HDR shots that Im still proud of to this day, but for the most part I look back in disgust at the brief period of time I thought HDR was the answer to my creative prayers. The problem with HDR is that they're fun to do at first, but then you realise just how overprocessed your shots look, so you spend a lot of time learning photomatix so you can make subtle HDR's that dont look as though you've used HDR, but then whats the purpose of using the process anyways. Dont get me wrong...HDR is a very useful tool under certain circumstances, but there are very few scenarios where its use is required, or even complimentary. As others have said before, learn the basics of composition and exposure, THEN maybe play around with HDR a bit. and for gods sake, please be conservative with its use. biggest piece of photomatix advice -> use a low light-smoothing setting and as low of a saturation setting as you can tolerate. confusion surrounding those 2 settings are probably responsible for the bulk of the garishly oversharpened and hypersaturated HDR images you see on the internet(s)

| | | Getting good final results is very much dependant on the quality of the initial shots - granted you can do a lot with post processing, but it will never make up for a properly timed and stopped exposure. As a former news photographer I can attest to the fact that knowing your gear and using it to it's full capacity will ensure that any post processing you do will be for effect, and not to compensate for over/under exposure. I shot 35 MM slide in both B&W and Color, and I have to say that though I miss mucking around in the darkroom, I sure do appreciate the ability to view results real-time as with digital. Kinda wish I'd had Digi back when! - Karlos
