not to be a dick but who the fuck are you?

judging by the quality of your work, your in no position to decide what critique is valuable or not. with the exception of your fifth shot, they are all fairly poor photographs. they are all either boring, sloppily composed, or both.

1.
i mean really? its an awkward point of view of a boring dentist chair. your eye is drawn up the chair to the also boring lamp, and then out the window. the lighting is boring, there is no emotion or atmosphere to the shot. it's straight up boring.

2.
this shot had potential. too bad you shot it so your lines are all crooked, everything is in focus, and it looks like your shot from below your kneecap. stop being lazy and raise your tripod. try shooting at eye level before you start working with awkward angles. lucky for you, the exposure is alright, but im sure you dont know how you got so lucky.

3.
wow, this picture gets me a soft chub. old vinyl. woo.

honestly, if you hadnt cut the g off and had tried to incorporate some depth of field to focus the eye, you'd have a boring shot i'd expect from a high school photo student taking picture in their grandparents house. the grain makes me nauseous. every heard of low iso? try noise ninja or the noise reduction software by NIK.

4.
are you seriously posting this? it's about as boring as watching grass grow. the least you could have done was keep your lines straight. im surprised your common sense didnt kick in and tell you this shot is putrid. the colors blow, the the kneecap height perspective makes my neck hurt, and in case you didnt get the memo, generic "run of the mill" institutional sinks are fucking boring.

5.
its a good shot. the over sharpening and overtly blue sky are a little hard on the eyes though.

now you've got a real critique.

hey thanks for you douchebaggery but maybe if you looked at some of the post form the person I was directing that at you would understand why I said that.

I guess you have nothing better to do then write a long "critique" doing nothing but being a cock. perhaps you should go back to raping your cat to take out your anger.

My opinion:

1) Great shot

2) Great as well, perhaps try to get full window in-frame next time

3) Has potential, but cutting off the "g" in "great" ruins it. Also, turn down your ISO

4) Least favorite. For some reason, I just don't like the angle. Otherwise it's a fine picture

5) Looks good, but would look better with HDR

Damn, Drecks. I'm not sure how open you are to honest criticism. You have to take into account that all of these are opinions. You don't have to defend your work, man. If you open them up to critique then you are supposedly ready to take opinions and form them into ways to make your work better. Nobody here has the intentions of telling you to never pick up a camera again, in fact it's more about picking it up more. Your defenses are blocking you from learning new things.

I am open to honest criticism but there is a difference between being honest and just being a dick. The people who have been honest with me I appreciate a lot and the only think I defended then was the fact that the UER unloader destroyed my quality.

what really bothers me is the fact that you can look though either critique forum or just a thread with pictures and see so many pictures that are horrible and yet have people saying they are excellent and wonderful.

Having people who don't really know what hey are talking about does not help either, I just don't see the point in pretending that you know more then you do in one post when someone can just look at their previous posts and see that they know very little at best.

No matter what people will never agree what is good and what isn't because there is no definition with photography, you can only stay within guidelines. if someone finds a picture boring because they think is is just a chair well then I guess they haven't accepted the fact of that being the only think that is left most times. would it be better for me to take a picture of an empty room? Or perhaps things really do just need more dinosaurs.

Anyone can think they are a photographer and I don't I would like to be but truth is I have only even owned a camera for 2 years and even if I have been getting out and shooting as much as i could that isn't enough time to learn all the things I should know. I honestly get the chance to shoot something maybe once a month.

This is true.

This is the internet, please do not forget that.

This right here should be your reason for not caring what people say about your work. Your work is called "yours" for this reason. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. All you can do is take the criticism, whether it be good or bad or even poorly judged, and apply it to your knowledge of the subject.

Or perhaps things really do just need more dinosaurs.

QFT, dude.

I honestly get the chance to shoot something maybe once a month.

Everyone deals with the same thing, man. Life comes first no matter how you look at it. I would love to put my camera before all things, but I haven't taken a picture in almost a week. Yeah, it hurts and shit but hey, at least I'm alive. It's a shitty point but you understand. Don't worry about the time you have because eventually you will get to where you want to be in photography. For the amount of things I've shot, I assumed I would be better by now. But that is not always the case.

Not to be a dick but are you one who is really in a position to critique? A critique should come from an educated mind and eye which from what tell photography wise you don't possess.

one of the most ignorant things i've ever seen post on this site. a critique from anyone who didn't shoot the picture is helpful regardless of their level of talent. another set of eyes always reveals something interesting that the photographer didn't see or realize.

that being said - these are technically pretty bad.

you're compositions are just wrong

1 - crooked and you cut off almost half of the only subject

2 - crooked, awkward pov

3 - you again cut off the only subject in the photo

4 - crooked, off centered, under exposed boring

5 - crooked, weird tones, weird exposure.

so please don't criticize someone else for 'not being good enough' to critique when you yourself do not seem to have 'an educated mind and eye' surrounding photography

I'm not sure why everyone feels the need to rip him apart right now.

Have any of you seen half of the pictures that are posted on this site?
to be honest, i don't think he was being a dick. If any of you took the time to see her photographs you would understand where he was coming from.

Isn't a critique supposed to consist of at least a bit of constructive criticism?

None of you have said anything helpful, if you think that there is something wrong with his pictures then why not tell him what you think he should improve on maybe give him some advice so he can improve.

This is a great website that is full of awesome advice, and there are some great people on here.
But as a community it sucks, none of you think twice before ripping some "newbie" (not speaking about dreckenschill) apart. If someone doesn't know how to use the search on the website more then half of you are assholes and just spit out some comment full of complete bile guaranteed to make them feel lousy.

everyone is allowed to have their own opinion.

personally, i like his photographs and i find them much better then quite a few others i have seen on UER.
sure there are things he can work on, but did he say that he was a professional?
was he handing critiques about others work left and right telling them that there were things they should improve on? and pretending like he completely knew what he was talking about? no.

grow up.
stop being assholes all of you, and learn to get along and help each other.

you show me one thing i said in my critique that isnt legitimate. prove one thing i said wrong and i'll walk away. "i like it" isnt a legitimate argument against my critique, for the record.

why even reply only to cause more of an argument?
who are you to be such a jackass and leave a long diatribe, or as you seem to think "critique" about someones photographs?
I would like to see some of your pictures for people to rip apart.

& P.S. just because he stood up for himself doesn't really make him an asshole.

There's been a lot of douchebaggery in this thread. I don't understand why he questioned a random poster's ability to critique; her comment was decent and helpful. And I don't understand why another random poster needs to call him on that, in his own thread.

I've never posted my work on UER, and don't plan to anytime soon, to avoid looking like a tool, much like you just have. Next time take your critiquing with a grain of salt, and get over it. Just because I have to baby talk you through your own set, says nothing about my own skill level.

EDIT: I'm sorry, I'm way late on the game here. I probably should have read the rest of the thread, but I was pretty much flaming mad. I obviously don't know anything, since I'm just a lowly wedding photographer.

Excuse me? You know nothing about me. In fact, I've never posted my work on UER, and don't plan to anytime soon, to avoid looking like a tool, much like you just have. Next time take your critiquing with a grain of salt, and get over it. Photography is my occupation, and just because I have to baby talk you through your own set, says nothing about my own skill level.

You have to baby talk me through it?

P.S. you have posted some pictures on UER... doors?? yeah thrilling pictures and a true display of your professional photography skill.
