Does anyone know of any military or mining tunnels around the HRM area that are worth checking out? I've exhausted the supply of military tunnels i know of, any help would be much appreciated!

I wonder if there is any picture evidence of the openings to these.

And to think, there's probably a lot more that we don't know about.

Problem is, with the current layout of the city, its unlikely to access them now, unless you tore up the floorboards of some really old ass house in Halifax to find a trap door to such a place.

I don't know if the thread still exists somewhere on the site or not, but I recall somebody saying that somewhere in the basement of Scotia Square, there's an access point, but it's locked up or something. Can't remember exactly how it went. Point is: if there is access, it's probably in a place where we can't get into without a damned good reason.
I also heard there was access from the dockyard too. Don't know how true that is.

I skimmed that post earlier. It's archived. Very unproven.

i've always been doubtful about access from scotia square. i don't see a reason why the property owners/architects/developers would leave an access point to secret tunnels in a shopping mall which is privately owned and staffed. i would be more of the opinion that the municipality, military or parks canada would specifically request (or demand) that there be no access to the tunnels at all.

from the dockyard, i would believe, though i'm not sure if they would see the use in having access either. you'd have to guard the access, or barricade it enough to ensure no one (like us) gets in when no one is looking. guarding and barricading (also maintenance) means work and money, which they may not be interested in spending on empty tunnels that go nowhere. further to that, the access would pose a security risk if someone finds an access from outside (say scotia square).
i would think it more likely that the military would brick up any access, and simply make note of where it is on the off-chance they need it later.

I also seem to remember my friend telling me that when he was in Army Cadets at the Armouries, his CO told them that there was access to the tunnels from there as well. I highly doubt there is any tunnel access from there, but you never know. It's a good place to have a tunnel to connect to the rest (tactically). But then again, I never really believed anything he said anyways.

Was in 1st Field Artillery Regiment RCAC for 2 years, the armories go down about 2 levels under the street. All the bottom levels are ammo/weapons depots, much like a maze down there with certain areas blocked off.

If there is a tunnel access point, its in the armories. Which means its impossible for any of us to access unless you're with a reserve unit stationed there.

I was in the army reserves for about a year and a half. I spent many nights wandering alone in the basement of the Armouries on patrol duty (which BTW is damn creepy at 4am). over the years, many thousands of other people wandered around there in the late hours doing the same thing, and no one has ever been able to come back and confirm such an opening.

that being said, I would agree that it would have made sense to have an access point to the Citadel tunnel network. And there was spots in the basement that clearly were bricked over doorways. But if there is/was an access there, I think its been long bricked over, or hidden so well that a thousand guards who were supposed to peer in every corner to check for the Red Menace wouldn't see it.

that being said...there were a couple rooms we were forbidden to go into during patrol duty (boiler/electrical room, equipment storage, weapons locker, etc), or even during the day, including some rooms i had never been in for the whole year and a half in was there, which no one knew what was inside So while its very unlikely, it's not impossible that somewhere in the Armouries theres a door labeled To Secret Tunnels. Warning: Awesome.

Well, I figure if there is in fact a tunnel at the Armoury, it would probably only connect it to Fort George. There's no real reason for it to connect with the rest of the tunnel system, not too mention it's a bit of a stretch for it.

If anything, there might be a single tunnel connecting the Armoury to the Citadel. I doubt it though. It would make sense to have the Armoury connected to the network of underground tunnels we know exists under the downtown.

I connector between the Armoury and Citadel is more likely than a Downtown <-> Georges Island connector.

Thought I'd post a link to my downtown Halifax tunnels map... I updated it with the Armoury tunnel.

Tunnels that don't likely exist are in red.
