underground tunnels - downtown Van
< on 11/13/2009 2:25 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I've heard so much talk about these from a variety of different people I know in person but no one knows how to get down there or if there even is some good access points. I've seen several pictures from different users in Vancouver of underground tunnels but what I want is exact addresses of access points. I know there is a bunch around UBC as well which I'd imagine are way easier to access, but I'm mainly concerned about the ones downtown.

Are these things even worth checking out? I supposed it'd be cool if you were hanging out with some random friends downtown and decide to show them something cool but other than that is it worth it?

There was a website circa 2004 that went through some of the common rumours of tunnels in Vancouver and I cannot remember what it was called now.

Jester I think knows what I am talking about.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

I'm going to address this point by point.

I've heard so much talk about these from a variety of different people I know in person but no one knows how to get down there or if there even is some good access points.

Read as: probably don't exist, at least not in the form described to you. As a city of some size, the downtown core almost certainly has tunnels of some sort, whether they be steam, telecom, power, or water (or some combination thereof). That said, they may or may not be accessible. If you google around, you'll find Max Action's writeup on The Labyrinth in MSP. Note the bit where he warns about the security and search around for what happened when someone popped an alarmed manhole into one of the tunnels.

Posted by Accidental_Protege
I've seen several pictures from different users in Vancouver of underground tunnels

Pics or it didn't happen. Or links to pics or the pics didn't happen.

what I want is exact addresses of access points.

Good luck. Even if these tunnels existed and someone here knew that information, she would probably not be willing to divulge it in such a cavalier manner. Especially to someone she did not know and trust.

Posted by Accidental_Protege
I know there is a bunch around UBC as well which I'd imagine are way easier to access

Surprise, UBC has steam tunnels! Who would have thought?

That's a values question. One must always ask if something is worth it. Personally, I think that getting into off-limits tunnels is a worthwhile pursuit in itself. If your motivation centres on showing it off to your friends (not that showing off is by definition bad, just superficial if that is your only driving force) then I would question whether it is worth the trouble of getting in.

I don't intend to be overly mean; I just want to give you a reality check.

water water everywhere but not a drop to drink,
all i have to say is good luck, i agree with digital_me.
there is defiantly people that know about tunnel's but i can assure you that noone will give you an exact POE do some research go for a walk look down cover's without drawing much attention to yourself maby check out some other locations take some picture's post a bit more and get to know the local's and maby someone will take you on a trip or give you some hint's the best part of tunnel's is knowing you found it on your own (other than actually going in them)good information isnt hard to find but there is a level of trust needed and that's hard to give a new person with little post's ( i like the set of your first location you posted good job) but we need to see some more,
again good luck, and happy tunnel hunting,
i plan on making a trip to van soon if anyone want's to meet up. i havent done any exploring over there in a long time now

thanks man. I've got military grade gum boots so water isn't a problem. I had to use them through the quick sand and water at Woodlands to get into the basement and it worked fine.

So the meet ups are still going on in Van every now and again? That's awesome and I'd love to be apart of that one day.

Welcome to the forum. There really should be an FAQ which reads: Though we love you, the road to jail is paved with people discussing things too openly on the internet. So please do not take offense if we kept quiet about the tunnel's secret entrances.

To answer your questions briefly

1) Yes, this thread is actually a cryptogram. But do not read too much into it.

2) Vancouver, as far as I know, isn't extremely tunnelful. Yes, there are tunnels, but no, they are neither safe nor easy to access, the latter (our collective lack of will, fortitude and luck) being the real reason neither I nor anyone I know of has ever infiltrated them. If you have better luck, please tell us about it.

3) Yes, A good pair of Wellingtons are the ideal footwear for draining.

4) Reputable sources tell me that tunnels do exist in Victoria, large, cavern-like tunnels even - the kind with valuted roofs and underground rivers, but KK is the man you want to talk to about this.

4) There are no regular meets though we do have meets, they just aren't regular. The last one was 2 weeks ago, and there will be another one, maybe soon, if we weren't such procrastinators. But feel free to nag us.

5) I wish you good luck.

I know that the entrance to one of the Dunsmuir tunnels (train tunnels running under downtown Vancouver to the waterfront, one of them is now used by the Skytrain for the downtown portion while the other is abandoned) was located behind the Costco next to Stadium station. Don't know if it's still there, but an old picture on Wikipedia from while Costco was still being built shows the entrance pretty clearly.

There's also tunnels under some of the older buildings in Vancouver General Hospital, but these aren't closed to public access, all you have to do is go in the elevator in one of the old buildings and push for the bottom floor (at least you could the only time I was there, which was...oh jeez, almost ten years ago).

Other than that, the steam tunnels under UBC and the rumors I've heard about a tunnel under Capitol Hill...not much else that I can think of other than train tunnels that are still very much in use, one running under Lonsdale Quay and the other being the one that allows trains to get to the Second Narrows rail bridge, and of course the tunnels used by the Skytrain and Canada Line. If you want to go exploring in any of those, then it's your funeral I guess...

I will weigh in by saying yes, there are steam tunnels that traverse the whole downtown area.Wherever you see steam coming out of concrete planter boxes, that is a tunnel underneath.
The majority of them run deep deep undergrount, possibly 2-3 stories deep.
The one I personally saw was accessed through the old province newspaper building a long time ago during the renovations.
My sister worked for Teresen gas,and walked through a few of them.
How exciting are they? Not very. Picture a long concrete corridor with high pressure pipes in them.
Thats really about it.

There are also sewage tunnels that start under the alex fraser, and carry all the way to the ocean.
They are wide enough for a car to drive down, and deep enough that you need a boat to get through them.
I got to see those while they were recoating the concrete.Once again, not very exciting, but pretty neat knowing theres a tunnel that goes for miles underground.

For years there was speculation about tunnels that stretched from Van Tech school (a former army training site) to city hall,in the case of an attack, the city officials could be wisked away to safety.
I looked for this years ago with the help of a school custodian, but all we found was a rifle range, bowling alley and pool.
Could it exist?
Maybe, but I would doubt that they would travel to the city hall, which at that time would be the art gallery downtown.

There are also service tunnels all underneath Robson square, but they just go into pacific centre, which itself is underground.

Given the location of Van Tech, that would have to be one long, deep tunnel.

I think you're talking about the 99% insane "purple crow"s site which showed various Vancouver sites along with his conspiracy theories about reptilian overlords...

As for tunnels in Vancouver, why would anyone think there are tunnels?

I met Purple Crow last year, interesting chap. The P.O. Tunnel in Van is real, and has been used in various films. It's a tunnel first, not a 'tunnel/conduit' that's full of pipes, wires and what not.

Yeah, it'd have to go under all the industrial yards which are on much lower ground than Van Tech, and you'd need handcars inside it or something - I sure would HATE to walk all the way from the art gallery to Van Tech, even in a straight line.
