You can always infiltrate a hotel or anywhere to get on a roof somewhere take pictures and give us the story. If you are really interested I know of a few places down here in the Hampton Roads area. I can show you around some crazy shit if your bold and want to get your adrenaline pumping.

Hey Robby, I'm bold and love an adrenaline rush. Why the hell haven't we explored together yet?! Let's meet up dude!

I'm brand new to this. I'm part of a group that is fascinated by urban exploration. We want to learn as much as possible, and get into it quickly, but we are starting really green.
We need some experienced explorers to help us out. We are located in Richmond, VA, but willing to drive up to a few hours out if necessary.
If anyone wants to help us out, give advice, go exploring with us... whatever, please respond. Your expertise, adventures, stories, and advice is very appreciated.
Thank you!

I'm sorry, but...

i mean...you have an abandoned building, and then you go inside of it. what is there to study or become an expert on? sorry if i sound like a dick...this is just very silly to me. you should study and become an expert on something that is a little more in depth than getting from point a to point b, and then from point b back to point a.

There are many locations down town for you to check out. Drive through the slip and keep your eyes open. Unfortunately, many spots are being developed/already developed into apartments and office space. Tobacco Row was my favorite, but that's all gone now. You've got some abandonments in the Church Hill - Chimborazzo areas as well as Jackson Ward. Get on Google Maps and have a look.

Yes. I don't want to mislead anyone. We are technically "studying" urban exploration. But it is a topic we all chose because we wanted to get into it. So please don't think of us as spectators or 'researchers' because it isn't like that. We just want to see some cool stuff and meet some cool people and learn a few things along the way.

Are you working on a specific project related to urban exploration? Or are you hoping to?

Disclosure is kinda a funny thing to negotiate with quotation marks.

If you can wait a little while, I think there's probably a regional meet-up planned in a couple of months.

I just want to weigh in and offer some advice aside from what was previously mentioned:
You don't need anyone to show you exploration, locations or anything. There's tons of methods to find locations. spend alot of time on bing and gmaps, drive around and look, and of course, keep hanging around here. Establish yourself in the community, meet locals etc. All these things take time, be patient.

Another thing: You'll read alot of warnings about police and security, but to be honest most of the explorations I've done (security or not) are simply a walk on site and enter the nearest open door / window. Parking nearby and bushwhacking to your target is preferred. Parking on site is a great way to let the authorities know you're there.

Other than that, be careful, carry plenty of water, first aid and insulation just in case. Take it slow, and enjoy. Alot of this may seem like common sense (cause it is) but these things are often overlooked.

One last thing: read the rules of uer, I'm one to talk as I've violated them in the past unintentionally. That being said, learn from my mistake!

Good luck

everyone's gotta believe in something... I believe I'll have another drink!

And you probably were busy with other things, so I forgive you, I have this weekend off if you wanna go check some things out there is an old navy APL rusting by a chop shop / corn mill near by (closer to you than it is to me), that I've been dieing to check out.

Common sense, a desire to figure out what's around the corner or if you can there's another way in, and maybe a flashlight are all you need. As for your first explore being anti-climatic, many are unless you make them.

If you're getting into it for some sort of research purpose, then there are a few avenues you can go down. Some people explore for the photography, some for the history, some for the sheer thrill of it. It isn't always clear which it is and it often varies as time goes on or the location/mood changes. If you want to look at it as an exploration of history/the past/etc., then I'd try to do some research on Google, harass the city departments for records, and so on to find info on locations. If you want to look at it as a community, build up your own group's experience first. There's a lot to be said for a group of close friends that work well together - it can make all the difference in the world if you get into a tricky situation. As silly as it may seem, we're a bit secretive and not very trusting sometimes. Some of us have a lot to lose if we piss off the wrong people. But stick around, hang out on the forums, talk to people, post photos/stories. Once you get past the crusty outer shell, a lot of us are really quite pleasant.

Like it's been said, look around you. The world is a jungle gym. A location is as fun or as boring as you make it. You can wander around a place and think "how lovely the decay is today," or you can say "I can get down there without the stairs - watch."

Also, if you guys make it down to East TN, send me a message. DJCraig, Coley and I are fairly active, and we have a nice variety of locations in the area. Some amazing industrial locations and a great drain, complete with water slide. But... make sure to talk to us and give us some warning/some idea of who you are. If we're ever up that way, I'm sure one of us will get in touch with you and others in the area.

like it's been said before, there ain't nothing to it but to do it. All you have to do is scope out a cool spot and maybe bring a flashlight with you. And remember, urban exploration isn't just limited to buildings but includes drains, water towers, bridges ,or whatever other cool thing you can find so go have some fun and forget all this expert stuff.
