I was wondering if anyone ever had the chance to explore Ridge Home before it was torn down in 03' (I think) there are still some buildings being used, but I never got to check it out. I was an old sanatorium *creepy* and I love it hehehe.It was on 58th by Ridge Road, there is a Target there now. Please let me know thanks oh and any other abandoned asylums/sanatoriums you know about?

| | | | I actually have explored what's left of the main campus at Ridge. I *worked* for them. There are a few buildings on the property that look like they're not being used - those are actually right next to the sex offender unit, and there are plans to put more residents (sex offenders, namely) in as they expand.
It was a creepy building when I worked there like, two years ago. And all the stories about people being shackled and tortured (teeth being pulled out as punishment, testing of treatments and meds w/o consent) - those are actually all true. That happened mostly in the 70's and earlier, I believe, before the government stepped in and closed the place down for a short time for an investigation/revamp.
As far as other sanitoriums/hospitals, you're mostly on your own doing research. Google is your best bet, as folks 'round here are a little reticent (understandably so) to just hand out location information to newbies.

Ridge home originally was a large property (several acres), with the original main campus having been where the Super Target currently stands. They sold most of it off, and now the residents are in actual houses throughout several neighborhoods in Jefferson County, with the CCAs, nurses, and CNAs reporting back to the main building for scheduling, training, etc. (I think that's the only care for developmentally disabled adults that's run like this by the State.)
Sorry, I don't think my original post was clear: I never got to explore the old portion of Ridge (where Super Target is) as that was torn down before I got into exploring. I was at the building on the top of the hill.
It was an awful job. I lasted about 6 weeks, and all it did was reinforce my dislike of assault and hatred of poo.

I was going to mention this, as porcelain princess had lots of info about it, I believe she worked there for a little while as well or her family did. Do you still have her website bookmarked? It had a good amount of info and pictures of it right before most of it was torn down.

| | | | I explored all of the old section back in the summer of 2002. I think I've still got some pictures somewhere, but I'm not sure where they were. I've still got a scar on my chin from the shop building. Basically, there was a brick 2 story building on the corner of ridge and the north-south road, which was the oldest.. early 1900s I think. Near it was the foundation of another, larger building that had burned (I think) Moving south from ridge there was the newer section that was dominated by a 50's era H shaped single story building, with lots of individual rooms, some kitchens, and a large school-like gym in the center. This building was filled with 60's vintage avocado green furniture and some projection TV's. East of the H building was a shop building, and then further east was the power house (which bordered Kipling) South of the shop building was another two story building whose access was blocked by a tree. I think it was supposed to be the laundry building. On the west side near the road were two long narrow single story buildings that looked like housing with pretty weird basements, and the foundation of a third that had burned. South of those was a weird building that was like a kindergarten, complete with toys and seemed in much better shape than the others. There were several other buildings on the north, such as a garage and small house, (I'm probably forgetting about some here) All in all, there was some interesting stuff, a lot of asbestos, a lot of other people walking through there, and I think every night ended evading the cops.
