| | | Posted by g.o.s.t. We all make them. Whats your biggest mistake to date that you have done while exploring? Mine was last night. Me and some buddies of mine drove 20 min to get to our start point when I realized I forgot my camera battery on the charger. After we got the battery we decided to set out on the last leg of our trip an hour late. When we got there we got set up to take some photo's when I realized I again forgot my battery. The night ended up being a giant bust and we ended up empty handed after a long tiring hot muggy bug filled night. I felt like such an idiot. Lets learn from each others mistakes so we don't make them ourselves. I learned make a checklist before you go and double and triple check you got everything.

My biggest mistake so far has been driving 20 minutes back to the house to get your camera battery, and then walking the mile and a half through the humid mosquito infested area back to our starting point to retrieve it again

| | | So, I don't know about the rest of you, but when I introduce someone to UE I try to make sure they have good exploring qualities and that I can have a certain level of trust in them. I took someone with me to a really cool place and I thought I could trust them with basic rules of ue. This same person informed me last night that they would be going back to this place to take some things for art supplies without me because I don't like taking things from locations. In light of an upcoming meet up in this area and knowing from exploring with her that she's a noob and pretty clumsy, I told her that I couldn't control her actions, but she should wait until after the meet up. Then, to my disbelief, she stated that she just couldn't show that much consideration. I was in shock. I told DJ Craig what was said so that he might be able to reason with her as well, but to no avail. With that information, I'm wondering if anyone can offer some helpful advice. I'm afraid I may have lost a friend and a location, and I feel awful about it.

| | | Probably going into a location unprepared. Freedom Tunnel is probably child's play for most veteran explorers; but as a relative newbie, I'd say that going alone without knowing a way out can be pretty unnerving. That was also the first time I met homeless people exploring, too. Picture related, I took it from the hallway of supposed "exit" which happened to be a sealed metal door.

I don't actively choose to shit on abandonments (or near them) but sometimes, nature doesn't afford you that choice.

| | | Last site I was at was rustic with poison ivy in lots of places mixed with other brush. I risked it with shorts because it was really hot and I am stupid. I somehow didn't get it on my legs. I got it on the out side of my hand. WTF?

| | | I have this primal fear of ticks. I know I make it out to be a much bigger deal than it should be but I usually make sure I use half the can of bug spray on my legs because of it. It's like a phobia. I haven't made the mistake of not wearing pants but I have forgotten bug spray and deeply regretted it the next few weeks.

I actually put some serious thought into what I'd do when/if I introduce someone new to my "informal" exploring group. I'm not terribly bothered about people's (in)abilities or anything like that, but if they turned out to have questionable judgment such as the person you're dealing with there, I'd probably just never bring them along again. If there's problems, the solution is obvious - either cut 'em or keep 'em; which one you pick is your call based on the situation. Biggest mistake? I'm sure I've mentioned this somewhere before, but walking into a fenced off building with surroundings which offered no cover from a nearby main road was pretty stupid. Thankfully the building owner was very friendly, and didn't seem to mind me one bit once I showed him I wasn't really a criminal (trespasser, maybe). That was my first topside, and I'd like to think I've learned how to properly approach topsides since then!

| | | There was this huge old military hospital which was already partially demolished. I wanted to explore the last remaining buildings before they were gone. Took a walk around the site. Only 1 way in: the main entrance. A few problems however: there was a car at the front gate with a security guard in it, and all the signs at the gate which stated on how awsome their uber high-end motion detection alarm system was. I simply asked the guard if I could have a look and take some pictures. "Sorry kid, no can do, the whole place is rigged with motion sensors." Naturally, when he left I hopped over the fence. No alarms went of. Ninja skills: 1, high end alarm system: 0. As soon as I entered the first building I heard voices and a camera. I took a sneak peak and saw another explorer. I walked up to him with a big smile and asked:"so also an UE huh?" He said:"ehm, noooo, I'm working here." CRAP he took me to the security guard which was really really really pist off. But they decided to let me go without any fines or anything. I think I had the chance to take 1 picture, it isnt even a good one. [last edit 7/16/2009 11:20 AM by wopke - edited 3 times]
